WWE SmackDown: Burning Questions to Address After August 16 Show

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 18 Aug 2016

Not all the pieces in the puzzle that is WWE SmackDown have found their places.Bray Wyatt remains a wanderer with no rivalry to call his own and no SummerSlam matchup on the horizon. The heel side ofSmackDown's tag team division has yet to produce a formidable duo. And it's not clear whether the returning Curt Hawkins will be a comedy act, a cheap imitation of previous gimmicks or a valuable contributor. Those answers won't be revealed until after SummerSlam. That's when Wyatt promises to set his sights on his next victim and when Hawkins will make his way back. And we will see how longWWE stretches out the story of Eva Marie's debut.A strong, entertaining edition of SmackDown on Tuesday did well to build toward Sunday's pay-per-view, but several issues remain unresolved. Uncertainty surrounds several Superstars on the blue brand. Who Will Step Up to American Alpha'The entirety of the SmackDown tag team division met in the ring on Tuesday night. Jason Jordan and Chad Gable continued their winning ways by teaming up to score the decisive pinfall for the babyfaces. That win, their burgeoning undefeated streak and the hype video WWE aired before American Alpha's arrival all point to the team sitting in a prominent spot on SmackDown. But who will be there with the duo'AsJason Powell of ProWrestling.net pointed out, "The heel tag teams on SmackDown continue to look like scrubs."That was the case again on Tuesday night, as The Vaudevillains, The Ascension and Breezangohad little impact on the big tag team match. The spotlight stayed on The Usos, The Hype Bros and American Alpha. The villains all fell with minimal resistance.American Alpha can't go much of anywhere without proper foils. And as of now, all the heel teams are starving for momentum.WWE is going to have to either turn The Usos heel or do something to inject some life into The Ascension or the team's peers. What's Up with Curt Hawkins' Gimmick'After weeks of reports about Zack Ryder's former tag team partner re-signing with WWE, the company finally made it official. On Tuesday's SmackDown, a video aired announcing Hawkins' return. This was not the Hawkins who left in 2014, though. Gone were the cane and the strut, and in their place stood hyperbolic statements about his ability. After the first glimpse of the new Hawkins, it's unclear how the company plans to present him. FloSports' Jeremy Botter wondered where this act was going:This gimmick could easily veer into goofy territory. It could be a smaller element of a more well-rounded character. It could feel too much like a ripoff of Tyson Kidd's facts or Matt Hardy's Version 1.0 gimmick. It's good to see WWE try to add something fresh to Hawkins' shtick, but we won't find out just what the company is going for until he shows up in the flesh. How Long Will WWE Delay Eva Marie's Debut'For the third week in a row, Eva Marie looked like she was going to wrestle a match, only to retreat by way of excuse.A feigned injury allowed her to escape competing two weeks ago. A wardrobe malfunction prevented her from facing Becky Lynch last week. And on Tuesday night, a supposed delay due to traffic left Naomi without an opponent. This strategy has been one of WWE's craftiest moves. Suddenly, there is anticipation for Eva Marie's first match, turning something everyday into something newsworthy. Fans will continue to grow frustrated as Eva Marie takes the coward's way out.And when Lynch or Naomi finally get their hands on her, the fireworks are going to be glorious. But this can only work if WWEremains creative in pushing back Eva Marie's in-ring return. How many reasons not to wrestle can WWE think of' How long before the act starts to get stale as the company struggles to come up with new elements to the angle'WWE is not historically patient, but if it can stretch this out for several more weeks, the payoff will be far better. What's Next for Bray Wyatt'The Eater of Worlds failed to force his way into the WWE world title picture in the past few weeks. On Tuesday's SmackDown, Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler bickered in the ring with no mention of Wyatt.WWE has offered Wyatt no alternative option for SummerSlam. His part in the Ambrose-Ziggler feud appears to be done unless he plans to interfere in the WWE title match at Sunday's pay-per-view.It's just as easy to imagine Wyatt being the next challenger for the world title as it is foreseeing him getting lost in the shuffle.SmackDown did offer a hint of anotherWyatt Family breakup, though. After his follower, Erick Rowan, failed to beat Ambrose, Wyatt looked disappointed as he held Rowan's sheep mask before walking away from his ally.Does that mean The Wyatt Family is going to split up again' Is Rowan set to be Wyatt's next foe'The folks at Daily DDT aren't excited about that prospect:Wyatt's situation remains unsettled. WWE may have a plan in place for the monster, or it may just be offering him placeholders until it figures out what road to send him on.He's too talented of a wrestler not to have major opportunities coming his way. Hopefully the rest of the PPV calendar is kinder to Wyatt than SummerSlam will be.
