Olympic 2016 Results: Wednesday's Medal Winners, Highlights for Each Event

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 18 Aug 2016

The United States continued to add to its lead in the 2016 Rio Olympics medal count Wednesday, but a number of other countries excelled in a variety of sports.Japan dominated wrestling, the United States was in full control in track and field and China also added a two more gold medals. On the other hand, countries like Kazakhstan and Indonesia saw rare victories on a busy day in Brazil. Here is a look at the latest medal count and a breakdown of what took place on Day 12.BadmintonIt was a dominant run from start to finish in the mixed doubles tournament for Liliyana Natsir and Tontowi Ahmad of Indonesia. The elite duo not only won all six of their matches in Rio, they didn't even lose a single set. The closest game in the entire competition was 21-16.Natsir and Ahmad even cruised to victory in the final round against Liu Ying Goh and Peng Soon Chan of Malaysia, winning the two games 21-14 and 21-12. It's clear the gold medal wasn't a fluke.Beach VolleyballIt might not have been the champions most expected, but the German combination of Kira Walkenhorst and Laura Ludwig clearly deserved the goldafter beating two different Brazilian teams on Copacabana Beach in two days.Ludwig and Walkenhorst beat the No. 1-seeded team in two sets in the semifinals and then the No. 2 seeds in the finals, again in two sets. The final 21-18, 21-14 finish showcased the domination over silver medalists Agatha and Barbara even in a hostile environment.Meanwhile, Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross bounced back after an upset loss in the semifinals. Walsh Jennings had won three gold medals in the Olympics, but following the first defeat in her Olympic career she stated, "I want to fix my match tomorrow and go home with a bronze medal," per Greg Wyshynski of Yahoo Sports. Some stars would pack it in when the gold wasn't on the line, but the Americans came through with a three-set victory over theBrazilian duo Larissa and Talita for the bronze. Walsh Jennings improved to an incredible 27-1 in her career at the Olympics.BoxingDaniyar Yeleussinov left no doubt whether or not he deserved the gold with a strong performance in the championship round against Shakhram Giyasov. The talented boxer from Kazakhstan won 3-0 on points, just as he had in every other match in Rio. The judges gave him a 10-9 win in each of the first two rounds before he was able to stay defensive and earn the win at the end of the third. After winning both a world championship and Olympic title, perhaps the only question is what is next. According to Greg Beachem of the Associated Press, Yeleussinov isn't sure:What we do know he is has some serious talent wherever he chooses to fight.EquestrianTeam jumping is all about consistency, and France was simply better than everyone else in this regard through two days to win the gold medal.Kevin Staut was the key performer with two perfect runs, although the full team of Philippe Rozier, Roger Yves Bost and Penelope Leprevost was impressive. Not a single round counted more than one penalty, leading to a victory at three points. The United States was in good shape at the start of the day with a zero score, but four penalty points by Lucy Davis held the team back. Fortunately, the rest of the team lived up to its ability and concluded with a five to take silver.Germany earned the bronze over Canada in a jump-off.Table TennisJapan fought hard in the table tennis team finals, but this event belonged to China.Ma Long, who won gold in the singles tournament earlier in the week, kicked things off with an easy 3-0 win in the first match. Jun Mizutani of Japan came from behind in the fifth set to win a dramatic 3-2 victory in the second competition, but that was the end of the fun for the eventual runners-up.China won 3-1 in the doubles match, and then Ma finished it off with a 3-0 win to bring home another gold for his country in table tennis.TaekwondoAlthough Sohui Kim of South Korea had won two world championships, her run to a gold medal was far from easy. The 49-kilogram athlete got off to a good start with a 10-2 win in her first match, but from there it was nothing but close contests. Her quarterfinal, semifinal and gold-medal match were all decided by one point, the last of which being a 7-6 victory.Zhao Shuai had an easier run through his tournament in the men's 58-kilogram weight class. The Chinese star had strong performances in all three rounds leading to the final, where he was able to defeat Tawin Hanprab by a score of 6-4.Still, it all counts the same when you can bring home a gold.Track and FieldIt was a big night for Team USA in athletics. There were 12 medals given out over four events Wednesday, and the United States brought home seven of them, including at least one in each competition. The best was clearly the 100-meter hurdles, which saw a clean sweep:In the long jump, the Americans went 1-2 with Tianna Bartoletta edging defending gold medalist Brittney Reese for the win. While Elaine Thompson deserves her credit for second gold of the games after winning both the 100- and 200-meter runs, Tori Bowie had been right on her tail while medaling in each event.Even the steeplechase featured an American on the podium with Evan Jager taking the silver.Ezekiel Kemboi was the clear favorite as the two-time gold medalist in the event, but fellow Kenyan Conseslus Kipruto broke away from the field late to win gold with an Olympic record:Kemboi crossed the line in third place but was later disqualified for a lane violation. With Ashton Eaton also getting off to a strong start in the decathlon, it was a good day for the United States at Olympic Stadium.WrestlingIt was an absolute dominant day for Japan, which won all three weight classes to continue a trend of success in women's wrestling.Kaori Icho was the biggest star on the day, earning a 3-1 win in the finals of the 58-kilogram weight class to win her fourth gold medal in a row. She has also won 10 world championships in this stretch, proving herself as one of the best wrestlers of all time. In reality, she should be climbing up lists as the best Olympian ever.Meanwhile, Eri Tosaka had the best celebration on the day:The 48-kilogram winner was apparently not tired at all from her 3-1 victory in the gold-medal match over Mariya Stadnik.Later in the night, it was Sara Dosho who completed the sweep for Japan with the win in the 69-kilogram class. Once again, the final score was 3-1 as she brought home her first major title.Japan has now won 10 of 15 gold medals in women's wrestling since it started in 2004.Follow Rob Goldberg on Twitter for year-round sports analysis.
