Olympic 2016 Medal Count: Thursday's Easy-to-View Nation Rankings and Results

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 18 Aug 2016

Usain Bolt returns to the track on Thursday evening as the men's 200-metre final headlines Day 13 of the Rio 2016 Olympics. The Jamaican phenomenon has already made history by becoming the first sprinter ever to win gold in three consecutive Olympic 100-metre finals, but a hallowed triple-triple potentially awaits in Rio de Janeiro.Outside the Olympic Stadium, an assortment of the planet's fittest men will collide in Thursday's triathlon event, where 55 of the sport's best will tough it out for a place on the podium.Among that number sits Brownlee brothers, Alistair and Jonathan, both of whom have a serious chance of adding to Great Britain's medal tally in the Brazilian capital. Here's a look at the current medal standings:Visit the official Rio 2016 website to view the medal leaderboard in full.Bolt's Gold Hunt ContinuesAs if one gold medal will ever be enough for him at any Summer Games, Bolt's chances of recording a fabled triple-triple will either sink or swim in Thursday's 200-metre final. And just as he did in the 100 metres, Jamaican sprinting's poster child was able to jog the last 50 metres of his qualifying heat on Tuesday, although even that wasn't good enough for him, per NBC Olympics:Justin Gatlin of the United States almost gave Bolt a good run for his money in the 100-metre finale, but the 29-year-old is showing all the traits of an almost superhuman contender in Rio de Janeiro:Before the men's 4x100-metre relay takes place on Saturday, Day 13 brings Bolt his chance to advance a feat that's never been accomplished before, but the competition is sure to be tight at the top. It's been eight years since he broke the 200-metre Olympic record in Beijing, with a time of just 19.19 seconds, and having finished just shy of that figure in London four years later, he'll be hopeful of going one better in Rio.Triathlon Takes Centre StageAway from the track, the British Brownlee brothers will be two of 55 triathletes looking to swim, cycle and run their way to Olympic gold at Fort Copacabana on Thursday. Both brothers were on the podium at London 2012, where Alistair clinched gold and sibling Jonathan settled for bronze, and thus have been numbered as the top two for the running in Rio, per World Triathlon:Former coach and International Triathlon Union figurehead Barrie Shepley also pointed out Alistair has his chance of sealing a piece of history in the sport on Thursday, and the Briton's chances by all means seem promising:The man who separated the pair in London four years ago, Spaniard Javier Gomez Noya, hasn't made the trip to Rio, but new competition is sure to emerge from the field and provide the brothers with a test.Among those sure to contend is Noya's compatriot, Mario Mola, and Richard Murray of South Africa, who won the 2016 Duathlon World Championship earlier this year.
