Arsenal Transfer News: Latest on Alexandre Lacazette and Joel Campbell Rumours

Published by Bleacher Report on Fri, 19 Aug 2016

Arsenal's hopes of signing Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette are reportedly "more unlikely by the day" after the player's manager reiterated his desire to keep hold of the striker. Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon have enquired to the availability of Joel Campbell.Get French Football News (h/t the Telegraph)provided quotes from Lyon head coach Bruno Genesio, who isn't intent on allowing his star frontman to leave the club despite a summer of speculation flirting with an exit:The Gunners are understood to be primarily chasing defensive recruits for their injury-ravaged back line, but attacking reinforcements are also needed with Olivier Giroudlacking fitness and Danny Welbeck sidelined. What's more, Squawka have attested to the notion France striker Lacazette could well be a more potent striking threat than many of manager Arsene Wenger's current options up front:Alexis Sanchez started in the central attacking role for last Sunday's 4-3 defeat at home to Liverpool, the same day Lacazette scored a hat-trick in Lyon's 3-0 mauling of Nancy in Ligue 1.Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp wrote in a recent column for theLondon Evening Standard, however, and contested that Giroud may already be a superior option to Lacazette:Arsenal fans want Wenger to sign Alexandre Lacazette but how can he be worth anything like the 60million Lyon are apparently asking'That asking price is probably twice as much as he is worth. You dont mind giving 5m more for a player in some circumstances but paying double the price when he didnt even make the France squad for Euro 2016' They already have Olivier Giroud, who led the French attack in that tournament, so there is a strong argument to suggest Lacazette cannot be an upgrade if his country turned its back on him.Arsenal not only face a fight in convincing the Lyon hierarchy to part ways with their talismanic attacker, but Lacazette himself could prove difficult to prise from the French outfit.Goal's Mohammed Ali recently provided quotes from the striker, who hinted he's likely to try his hand once again in the French top flight this season:Meanwhile, Wenger could be about to see one of his existing fringe attackers leave the Emirates Stadium after Sporting Lisbon reportedly registered interest in Campbell.Portuguese newspaperO Jogo reported the Lisbon giants have asked whether Campbell is available this summer (h/t Daily Star's Jonathan Green), with Sporting manager Jorge Jesus said to be a "big admirer."Fusion writer Miriti Murungi has argued the winger has been a victim of his environment at Arsenal:Campbell joined Arsenal from Saprissa in 2011, but he has managed to score just four goals in 40 first-team appearances for the Gunners, having seen most of his club success come while away on loan.Despite lighting up the 2014 World Cup on duty with Costa Rica, the 24-year-old has found a starting spot at the Emirates hard to come by, and Campbell may decide his career is best served by a departure.
