We asked, you answered ' here are 27 more moments when you realized you needed to quit your job

Published by Business Insider on Fri, 19 Aug 2016

Quitting your job can be a pretty difficult undertaking. You might feel stuck because you just need the money. Maybe you've landed your dream job, but the people you work with are terrible. Perhaps your difficult career hasyou feeling burned out.But eventually, something's gotta give.In early August, Business Insider asked readers to tell us aboutthe momentthey realized they needed to quit a job.The topic seems to have struck a chordwe received far more responses than we hadfor questions like theweirdest request your boss ever madeand the worst career advice you ever received. In fact, we had so many that we split the most memorable among them into two installments. This is the second, and you can see Part I here. Here 27 more stories from our readers, which involve foul-mouthed bosses, missed birthdays, truly insane work hours, and more. Some answers have been edited for clarity.SEE ALSO:Here are 27 of the most dramatic stories we've ever heard about quitting a job'At least dying on the operating table would mean that I wouldn't have to go back to my job'"After a considerable amount of workplace stressI was basically on a two year 'crunch'I found that I needed to undergo exploratory surgery to determine whether or not I had lymphoma.Part of the surgical prep involved signing a form acknowledging that, due to my height and build, there was an elevated chance that I would die while under anesthesia. I considered this for a moment. I reached the conclusion that at least dying on the operating table would mean that I wouldn't have to go back to my job.I signed the form and rolled the dice. After waking up I reviewed my thoughts and considered this one a 'red flag.' I resigned a week later."Rob, UK'She threw tantrums ' and items ' at me'"I switched gears and took a job at a small nonprofit. I was thrilled to ditch the daily grind and give something back to my community. In reality I ended up in a position with a well-intentioned director who lacked leadership skills, a group who resisted change (the "but we've always done it this way" crowd), and an admin who undermined me at every step because she had wanted my job. She threw tantrumsand itemsat me, withheld important information, trash talked me (sometimes to my face) all under the watchful eyes of the director who just didn't want to get involved. Frankly, I think she was afraid of this woman herself.During my two-year tenure there I lost my partner to cancer, my car to a flash flood, and my house to a divorce decree. I'm not kidding. I still managed to get my work done, meet my deadlines, and implement several new and necessary procedures in spite of a wicked case of founder's syndrome. I was stressed out all the time and having several migraines a month.I ended up in the ER with a headache that wouldn't respond even to morphine. My doctor told me that I needed to deal with these stress in my life or I was looking at a stroke. That was the moment I knew that I couldn't spend one more day at my job. Life is too short to deal with sanctioned hostility every day and I was simply too old to put up with it.Fortunately I inherited a small sum from my partner and made some money off the sale of my house, which enabled me to quit without notice the next week. Not very professional, I realize, but then my treatment was extremely unprofessional, too.I've been happily unemployed for almost a year now. Not a single headache since and I'm finally able to sleep through the night again. I know I need to jump back into the job pool again soon, but I have no regrets about quitting. No job is worth your life!"Anonymous'I forgot my girlfriend's birthday'"I absolutely had to quit once I became so anxious over going to work that I forgot my girlfriend's birthday."AnonymousSee the rest of the story at Business Insider
