NHIS Boss Reiterates Commitment To Optimal Service Delivery

Published by Leadership on Fri, 19 Aug 2016

The Executive Secretary of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Usman Yusuf, has reiterated his commitment to deliver optimal healthcare service to Nigerians. This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Ayo Osinlu, Head, Media and Public Relations of the scheme, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.Osinlu said that the executive secretary made the commitment during an advocacy visit to the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Ayuba Wabba. He explained that the visit was in furtherance of the on-going discussions for consensus building and support among stakeholders towards repositioning the scheme for effective service delivery.I am using this opportunity to reassure all Nigerian workers through the leadership of the NLC, that my stewardship at the Scheme shall be credible and purposeful. My mandate as custodian of the peoples commonwealth will not be betrayed or compromised.Under my watch, the enrolees shall be the key figure, all that we do must be in their best interest, while their rights under the scheme shall be respected and defended, he quoted Yusuf as saying. The spokesman said that the NHIS boss also pledged that there would be no room for any stakeholder to take undue advantage of the enrolees. He said that the NHIS boss however requested the cooperation and support of the leadership of the labour movement and all Nigerian workers, towards making the scheme deliver service in top quality.Osinlu also quoted Yusuf appealing to all Nigerians for patience and understanding on the perceived poor quality of service by stakeholders in the health insurance industry.According to him, Yusuf said that NHIS would assert its regulatory authority in a manner that will ensure all players keep within the laws and operational guidelines of the scheme. He also quoted Wabba describing the appointment of Yusuf as well made, while urging him (NHIS boss) to take immediate action to restore the credibility of the scheme.Osinlu said that the NLC chairman urged the Federal Government to exempt funds of NHIS from Treasury Single Account, because they are funds from Nigerian workers and not revenue accruing to the government.Besides, Wabba called for rapid expansion of the scheme, such that students, pensioners, aged and other vulnerable groups could enjoy coverage while strengthening Community Based Social Health Insurance Programme in the country.
