Australia's Chloe Esposito captured the gold medal in the women's modern pentathlon at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro on Friday after finishing second in the final event to jump from fourth place to first.Esposito, who finished seventh at the London Games four years ago, was 38 points off the pace heading into the combined (running and shooting) session. A 19th-place showing in the riding discipline meant it was going to take a special effort in the finale to pull off the victory, and that's what she produced.The Aussie nailed her 20 targets on just 21 shots to outpace her medal competition with a final time of 12:10.19 following the three-kilometer run.Chris Barrett of the Sydney Morning Herald commented on her memorable finish:The Australian Olympic team provided a snapshot from the medal ceremony:Meanwhile, it was a frustrating ending for Nowacka. The Polish star put herself in perfect position to claim gold after the first three events, but her shooting let her down. She needed 31 attempts to hit the 20 targets, which resulted in the 25th-ranked combined time (13:18.50) and dropped her to bronze-medal position.Clouvel also finished with her worst showing of the competition. She finished inside the top 11 in the swimming, fencing and riding portions but could muster only a 17th-place result in the combined session. Shooting made the difference once again, as she racked up 34 shots to knock down all the targets.Canada's Melanie McCann, who sat in third place after three rounds, had an average shooting effort. The running portion doomed her, however, as her overall time (13:42.43) ranked 32nd of 36 competitors and caused her to fade to 16th in the final standings.Whether it was poor shooting or lackluster running, struggles among the top three left the door wide-open for Esposito, who didn't let the opportunity slip away.
