3 Suspensions, SummerSlam Card and Top WWE News from Week of August 20

Published by Bleacher Report on Sat, 20 Aug 2016

After weeks of preparation, SummerSlam is finally upon us. This is the biggest show of the summer, and the second-largest pay-per-view of the WWE calendar, so a lot of effort has gone into promoting the event. In addition to Sunday's extravaganza, the Superstars of NXT will also put on another TakeOver special in Brooklyn, New York, Saturday night. Before we break down the shows, let's take a look at what else happened over the past week.Alberto Del Rio, Paige and Eva Marie SuspendedIt's been a busy week for the wellness policy enforcers over at WWE Headquarters. The company announced the suspensions of Paige, Alberto Del Rio and Eva Marie through WWE.com this week. This is a first offense for all three Superstars, so each will be serving a 30-day suspension. What many found interesting was how Paige and Del Rio, a couple in real life, were both suspended on Thursday.Neither one of them were on the SummerSlam card, but Marie was supposed to be part of a six-woman tag match, so now management has to decide if it will replace her or make it a handicap match instead.Marie is the only one of the three to address her suspension publicly. Here is what she had to say in a statement she made to Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet:I am disappointed that this suspension has occurred, yet understand and respect that WWE upholds their Wellness Policy to the letter and wont compromise on its integrity. I violated policy by not turning in portions of required paperwork in the time frame WWE Medical deemed timely. I look forward to my return! Thank you for your support. Brock Lesnar Rips Conor McGregorIn case you've been living under a rock, Conor McGregor has come under fire from pro wrestling fans for insulting the Superstars of WWE on his Twitter account:Despite also being a UFC veteran, Lesnar took exception to these comments, as he was a pro wrestler first, and still is to this day.During the WWE 2K17 press event on Friday, Sam Roberts of SiriusXM's OpieRadiointerviewed The Beast and asked if he had anything to say about McGregor's assessment of pro wrestlers. Here is a heavily censored transcript of his response, courtesy of Mike Killam of Wrestle Zone:I take [expletives] bigger than that kid. Come on. I know you kids all play [expletive] video games and you live in this false sense of reality and [expletive]. Im two hundred and [expletive] ninety pounds. This guys a hundred and forty-five pounds, and thats if hes lucky, gets up and eats his [expletive] Wheaties. If Conor McGregor wants to say some [expletive]to me, and get his name out there more than he already has, by dropping my name, I got [expletive] about ten words for him. Come here, face-to-face, and say it to my face.Otherwise leave me and the [expletive] WWE out of it, because I came to your arena and kicked ass. Now, if you want, and if youre so [expletive] tough, come to our arena and try and kick some ass.McGregor has always been outspoken, and many have speculated he only insulted WWE Superstars to create some buzz ahead of his UFC 200 fight against Nate Diaz. Needless to say, many people would be interested to see how he would do inside a wrestling ring. Former WWE Superstar Faces CWC CompetitorThis weekend may be all about NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II and SummerSlam, but Evolve also held an event Friday night featuring what was said to be an outstanding main event.Former WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes took on current Cruiserweight Classic competitor, and one of the favorites to win the whole tournament, Zack Sabre Jr.Rhodes defeated the talented ZSJ, and teased continuing to appear for the promotion in the future.Anyone who follows Rhodes on social media knows he put together a wish list of opponents to face on the indy scene. It will be interesting to see who he goes after next in his post-WWE career. Final Card for NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn IIThis weekend won't just feature the main roster doing battle at SummerSlam. It will also see the men and women of NXT invade Brooklyn for its second TakeOver event in New York. Here is a look at the final card, according to WWE.com: Final Card for WWE SummerSlam 2016SummerSlam is the second-biggest event on the WWE calendar in terms of hype, but it's just as big as WrestleMania in terms of the length of the show. With four hours for the main pay-per-view and a two-hour pre-show, we have six hours of wrestling to look forward to on Sunday.
