Under Armour Elite 24 2016: Score, Highlights and Twitter Reaction

Published by Bleacher Report on Sun, 21 Aug 2016

Some of the best high school basketball players hit the shores of the East River in Brooklyn, New York, for the 2016 Under Armour Elite 24 showcase game. Team Drive earned a 140-134 overtime victory over Team Clutch on Saturday night.Down 66-49 at the half, Team Clutch slowly chipped away at Team Drive's lead in the second half. With 0.5 seconds remaining in regulation, Hamidou Diallo committed a goaltending violation on an inside attempt by Gerald Liddell, allowing Team Clutch to tie the game at 129-129.Team Drive never trailed in the extra frame. Nickeil Alexander-Walker hit a three-pointer six seconds into overtime, which set the tone for how the period unfolded. Team Clutch couldn't string together enough defensive stops to get ahead.Team Clutch never led at any point in the game, which is a testament to Team Drive's dominance for much of the event and the improbable nature of Team Clutch's fight back into the game.It lost despite the best efforts of Isaiah Washington, who scored a game-high 36 points. He finished two points shy of tying Lance Stephenson's single-game scoring record (38 points). The McDonald's All-American Game has become synonymous with the hardwood's best prep prospects, but the Under Armour Elite 24 has featured a number of notable names.Milwaukee Bucks first-round draft pick Thon Maker played in last year's game. Washington Wizards point guard John Wall and Charlotte Hornets point guard Kemba Walker as well as Cleveland Cavaliers stars Tristan Thompson and Kyrie Irving are also among the event's notable NBA alumni.Washington could follow in their footsteps. According to 247Sports' composite rankings, he's the 18th-best point guard and 95th-best player overall in the 2017 recruiting class. The New York Post's Zach Braziller thought having the New York City native in the event was special:Andrew Slater of 247Sports shared a replay of one of Washington's most impressive shots of the night:In addition to Washington, many eyes were on Trevon Duval, who is the No. 1 point guard and No. 5 player overall in the 2017 class, per 247Sports' composite rankings.Scout.com's Evan Daniels was impressed by Duval's ability to penetrate:Hardwood Hoops Centrals Steven Barnhart also liked what he saw from the New Castle, Delaware, native:CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein offered major praise for Duval:Duval can also throw it down with the best of them. Overtime shared a replay of a thunderous right-handed jam by the talented floor general:ESPN.com's Jeff Borzello enjoyed when Duval and Washington matched up against each other:Duval's 26 points led Team Drive. Zion Williamson supplemented him with 23 points. Williamson put in a strong performance the night after winning the Elite 24's dunk contest. While Williamson raised eyebrows over the weekend with his athleticism, Ronnie Flores of BallIsLife.com thought highly of his shot selection:Like Washington, Diallo looked good in a losing effort. He scored 22 points and provided a few highlight-reel dunks. Diallo is the best shooting guard in the country, per 247Sports' composite rankings, and 247Sports' Crystal Ball gives the Kentucky Wildcatsan 82 percent chance of landing him.Wildcats head coach John Calipari has done a great job of developing blue-chip recruits, and if he gets Diallo on his roster, he'll likely be able to maximize Diallo's freakish athleticism.Saturday night offered a glimpse of what college basketball fans will be seeing in another year or two, and there's a good chance at least one or two players who took the court in Brooklyn will go on to succeed in the NBA.Williamson, Diallo, Duval and Washington haven't committed to colleges yet, either, so tracking their recruitment will be a major storyline in the coming months.
