Medal Tally Olympics 2016: Updated Standings, Results After Final Events

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 22 Aug 2016

After nearly three weeks, the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are drawing to a close. The athletic events have wrapped up, with the closing ceremony to come Sunday night. For the fifth time in the past six Summer Games, the United States finished as the top country in terms of gold medals and overall medals. China came in No. 2 in total medals, but Great Britain narrowly walked away with the edge in golds.Below are the full results from Sunday's various finals and a few of the more memorable moments from the Olympics' last day.Sunday Final ResultsSunday RecapSports fans have seen a number of creative coach meltdowns. Sunday's freestyle 65-kilogram bronze-medal match between Ikhtiyor Navruzov and Ganzorig Mandakhnaran may have set the bar for meltdowns to come.Officials awarded a point to Navruzov afterMandakhnaran began celebrating before the match ended. As a result, Navruzov was in position to win the bronze medal on a tiebreaker. To put it lightly, Mandakhnaran's coaches didn't take the officials' decision positively. They began removing their clothes in protest:Through a translator, assistant coach Byambarenchin Bayaraa explained the reason for his outburst, per USA Today's Nate Scott: "The referees are no good. There are three million Mongolian people, all waiting for a bronze medal. And now' No medal. Only (a few)Mongolian athletes come here."Substantially less drama came out of the United States' gold-medal game win over Serbia. The U.S. looked lackluster at times during the group stage and won its last three Group A games by a combined 16 points.Team USA knew when to turn it on, though, hammering Argentina by 27 points and then advancing past a talented Spain squad. The United States left little doubt Sunday, beating Serbia 96-66. At halftime, the U.S. was up 52-29.Kevin Durant led all scorers with 30 points on 10-of-19 shooting. He also grabbed three rebounds and dished out four assists. ESPN Stats & Info noted the Golden State Warriors star once again reached an impressive benchmark:Carmelo Anthony earned his third Olympic gold medal and announced he is retiring from Team USA duty. The New York Knicks star hasn't tasted an NBA title, but there's no arguing his international record. Not only was he there for the United States' disappointing bronze-medal finish in 2004, he was a key figure on the "Redeem Team" and helped the national team maintain its perch in international basketball. The Washington Post's Tim Bontemps saluted Anthony's work for Team USA:Whereas the United States was widely expected to win gold in men's basketball, Galen Rupp's bronze medal in the men's marathon was a pleasant surprise. He was the first American to win a medal in the event since Meb Keflezighi in 2004.Rupp was a decorated runner in college with the Oregon Ducks and is among the U.S.'s best distance runners. However, the Olympics were only the second time he had competed in a competitive marathon. In preparation for the event, he found inspiration from an unlikely source, per ESPN The Magazine's Mina Kimes:The 2016 Olympics were a massive success for the United States, but its fate could be different four years from now. Michael Phelps' Olympic career looks to be over, while Simone Biles almost certainly won't be back for Tokyo in 2020. This summer also illustrated the rest of the world is catching up to Team USA on the hardwood. The 2020 Olympics could be an opportunity for another country to claim Olympic supremacy, or new stars could emerge to carry the torch for the United States through another Games.
