WWE Raw Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from August 22

Published by Bleacher Report on Tue, 23 Aug 2016

An injury suffered by Finn Balor during his SummerSlam match against Seth Rollins forced the new champion to relinquish the WWE Universal Championship on Monday night, making the unfortunate Irishman the biggest loser of the night.Just 24 hours after the greatest win of his career, in which he put Rollins away cleanly with the Coup de Grace, Balor came to the ring with his arm in a sling and cut an honest promo about how much the opportunity meant to him.He handed over the new championship to general manager Mick Foley and took his leave, graciously exiting the ring and heading up the ramp until Rollins interrupted and set in motion the events that would dominate the rest of the broadcast. After calling him up to the main roster on July 19 and having him beat Roman Reigns a few nights later, it was clear that management had huge plans for the leader of the Balor Club. Unfortunately, those plans have been put on the back burner by an ill-timed injury that robs the company of a champion and fans of a series of extraordinary bouts with The Architect.Winner: BayleyAs one NXT great exited stage left, another arrived on the scene, ready to bring her wildly popular act to Monday nights.During Charlotte's braggadocious in-ring promo, during which she put herself over for beating Sasha Banks and becoming the first two-time WWE women's champion, Mick Foley interrupted and announced the signing of the hottest free agent of the New Era.Bayley stepped through the curtain in the same building in which she won the NXT Women's Championship and received an enormous pop. The most beloved star in WWE proceeded to defeat Dana Brooke and instantly entrench herself in championship contention. There has been no Superstar in any branch of WWE able to create the emotional investment that Bayley has in the last two years. Fans genuinely love her and will root for her to capture the most prestigious title in women's wrestling. That will do wonders for the sport and the storytelling among the female competitors. Losers: Cesaro and SheamusWith Balor forced to resign as champion, the opportunity arose for several top Raw stars to battle over the gold. Kevin Owens, Chris Jericho, Big Cass, Rusev, Neville, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Sami Zayn all entered into a series of matches to determine the four Superstars who will wage war for the title next Monday night.Conspicuous in their absences were Cesaro and Sheamus, fresh off a thrilling match one in their Best of Seven Series at SummerSlam. A former champion, The Celtic Warrior is a natural fit for championship contention, while Cesaro, one of the best wrestlers on the planet, has been robbed of title opportunities far too often. The frustration The Swiss Superman expressed in a YouTube exclusive video speaks volumes about his current place in the company and his feelings on the subject:That frustration is justified. There is no reason that a tag team specialist like Cass or Neville, a midcard talent who has been wasted in tag team matches since his return, should leapfrog either Sheamus or Cesaro in the pecking order, regardless of WWE Creative's lazy Best of Seven Series concept.Winners: The Dudley BoyzOn Monday night, Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley waved goodbye to the WWE Universe with a passionate promo that thanked the fans for their support over the last 20 years.Sure, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson and The Shining Stars all interrupted the proceedings, but the former tag champions went out as they should: by putting over younger talent and strengthening the tag division in the process.More importantly, if the time comes when the future Hall of Famers decide to come back to the company, a feud with The Club is waiting for them.In an era where too many longtime stars are hellbent on protecting their spots, The Dudley Boyz returned to WWE and proceeded to put everyone from The New Day to The Lucha Dragons over en route to giving back to the company that made them household names in pro wrestling.
