Should Michigan Panic After 3 Decommitments in 2 Days

Published by Bleacher Report on Tue, 23 Aug 2016

There are those recruiting stretches that make college football programs look untouchable, and then there are stretches where nothing goes right.Michigan is in the middle of the latter. The Wolverines have hit a two-day span that they'll look to mentally block out soon, losing two commitments on Monday and a third Tuesday morning. The three recruits2017 defensive tackleAubrey Solomon,2018 tight end Leonard Taylorand 2018 offensive lineman Jalil Irvinall are rated 4-star athletes. It's a blow for the Wolverines, who have been predominantly on the positive end of recruiting stories all spring, whether they focused on landing a commit or head coach Jim Harbaugh making moves to get his program publicity. But exactly how big of a blow is this less-than-24-hour stretch'Short answer: It'll sting temporarily. It shouldn't permanently.A friendly reminder: It's August. And there are still more than five months for the Wolverines to build their class. If we're talking the 2018 class, there are 17 months. There's no place for extreme panickingat least not yet.The timing of the decommitments, however, will be a discussion topic. Losing three pledges in such a short time is a momentum swing for the worst. Losing the 6'3", 305-pound Solomon may have been the biggest blow, as the Leesburg, Georgia, standout is ranked the nation's No. 5 defensive tackle and was the Wolverines' top-ranked defensive pledge.Solomon told 247Sports' Kipp Adamsthat he chose to decommit after receiving correspondence from Michigan thanking him for attending the annual BBQ at the Big House.A day or two ago, they sent my mom a card thanking us for going to the Michigan BBQ, but we never went. I do not know which recruit they were talking to, but it was not me. It was just a little heartbreaking, for me to supposedly be so high on their list, for them to confuse me with someone else.Plus, they spelled both of my names wrong after I told them, but that was not the main issue. I guess they do not have tabs on me.Losing 2018 pledges isn't as major, as coaches still have plenty of time to rebuild those relationships and ultimately regain their commitments. However, Taylor's decommitment will be something to watch, as the two-way standout is a Springfield, Ohio, residentand a major 2018 target for the Ohio State Buckeyes.Michigan never wants to lose a pledge to its archrival, particularly an athlete who can play tight end and defensive end at the next level. Taylor is ranked the nation's No. 13 tight end, but at 6'6" and 258 pounds with two years of high school football still remaining, he could develop into the quintessential strong-side defensive end.Irvin's decommitment was something of a surprise considering hecalled Michigan his "dream school." Rated the nation's No. 12 offensive guard in the 2018 class, Irvin will be an athlete to monitor as his recruiting process continues to develop.Michigan's 2017 class now has only one defensive tackle pledge in Berrien Springs, Michigan, 3-star Phillip Paea. After signing the nation's top-ranked player in the 2016 class in Rashan Gary, the Wolverines shouldn't have too many worries at the position, assuming Gary stays healthy.Michigan's 2018 class, with the decommitments, slipped from four players to twoand Leesburg, Georgia, safety Otis Reese and Dayton, Ohio, linebacker Antwuan Johnson are both 4-star prospects. Solomon and Reese are high school teammates and committed together in June during an unofficial visit to Ann Arbor. The Wolverines are hoping Reese can help get Solomon back.As for panicking, don't expect much from the Michigan faithful. There's still a lot of time to add elite playersand a bunch of uncommitted players out there to target. The good news for the Wolverines is that several of those elite athletes have Michigan high on their lists. Damon Sayles is a National Recruiting Analyst for Bleacher Report.
