WWE SmackDown: Potential Spoilers, Rumors, News and Preview for August 23

Published by Bleacher Report on Tue, 23 Aug 2016

AJ Styles will storm into Tuesday'sWWE SmackDown riding a freight train of momentum. He has plenty to gloat about after knocking off John Cena at SummerSlam. Is WWE world champDean Ambrose next on his list' Will Cena demand a third go-round with The Phenomenal One'WWE will answer those questions, as well as those regarding Bray Wyatt's intentions and the tag team division hierarchy, when SmackDown invades Uncasville, Connecticut. The first show after SummerSlam will look to build on the drama that unfolded on that pay-per-view. The Usos upset their allies, Randy Orton ran into a monster and Styles scored the biggest win of his WWE career.TheSmackDown preview on WWE.com, backstage reports and news updates provide an early glimpse of Tuesday's SmackDown before it airs on the USA Network at 8 p.m. ET.News, Potential SpoilersThe roster will be a bit thinner for the next month.WWE suspended SmackDown Superstars Alberto Del Rio andEva Mariefor 30 days after violating the company's wellness policy, as announced on its official website. At SummerSlam, WWE explained Eva Marie's absence by saying she went on vacation to recover from exhaustion. And Orton isn't likely to compete on Tuesday night after a brutal collision with Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. The bout ended with him gushing blood onto the mat. WWE announcedthat Orton "received 10 staples to close a laceration on his forehead."The wave of injuries that swept through SummerSlam didn't affect Dean Ambrose. But the WWE world champ could still be derailed thanks to backstage heat.According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Marc Middleton of Wrestling Inc), WWE officials were unhappy with some of Ambrose's answers in his live interview with Steve Austin earlier this month.Ambrose wasn't deep enough into the doghouse to lose the world title at SummerSlam, but it's worth keeping an eye on his booking for the next few weeks. Will Cena be around during that time' Speculation is rampant about whether he is set to go on hiatus again. After losing to Styles on Sunday, Cena left his "Never Give Up" wristband in the ring, seemingly a symbolic, farewell gesture:Couple that with another season of the Cena-led reality TV seriesAmerican Griton the way, per Denise Petski of Deadline Hollywood, and it makes one wonder if the powerhouse is going to step away from the SmackDown spotlight for the time being. SmackDown StreaksAmerican Alpha is the hottest team on Tuesday nights.Since arriving from NXT, Jason Jordan and Chad Gable are undefeated. Their win last week as part of the 12-Man tag match pushed their SmackDown record to 3-0 on SmackDown, perCageMatch.net.Add the fact that they were prominent figures in the 12-Man rematch at SummerSlam, and it's clear WWE is pushing Gable and Jordan toward the top of the division.Erick Rowan is in the inverse position, as he continues to look up at the rest of the roster.Last Tuesday, he fell to Ambrose in non-title action. That marked eight straight losses in one-on-one contests in a row, per CageMatch.net. His last singles win on the blue brand came way back inNovember 2014. SummerSlam FalloutAs noted in the WWE.com SmackDown preview, Styles is set to address fans after his big win over Cena on Sunday. The Phenomenal One notched his second PPV victory over WWE's golden boy. That's a major feat, and WWE wisely looks poised to build on it.The next logical step is for Styles to go after the WWE world title. Many will expect his announcement to center on that very prize.Once SmackDown introduces its own women's title, Nikki Bella will be in the mix to be the first to claim it.After recovering from neck surgery, Bella made a surprise return to the ring at SummerSlam. She took Eva Marie's spot in a tag team match against Becky Lynch, Naomi and Carmella. The former Divas champ made it clear in abackstage interview that she is part of the blue brand. She said, "Now, I'm just ready to take over SmackDown."IfAmerican Alpha wants to do that same thing, it looks like it will have to go through The Usos. The teams were on the same side at SummerSlam, but Jey Uso forced his way into the match and claimed the winning pinfall when it looked as if Gable had the victory locked up. That tension promises to lead to American Alpha's first feud on the main roster. And while the members of both the tag team and women's divisions wait for a title to fight over, Ambrose is standing by to see who will challenge him for theWWE World Championship. Will Ziggler earn himself a rematch after losing at SummerSlam' Will Styles step up to The Lunatic Fringe' Wyatt is a possible contender, too. That is, if he isn't too distracted by the splintering of his family. On last week's SmackDown, Wyatt seemed to tease a split between him and Rowan. The SmackDownpreview asked, "Will The New Face of Fear be focused on internal matters, after he dropped Erick Rowan's mask when his disciple was defeated by the WWE world champion one week ago'"As these stories develop, SmackDown has the distinct advantage of not having to rewrite its central narrative on the fly thanks to an injury, as Raw did on Monday. That, in theory, should make the blue brand the superior show this week.
