Sports Journalist Schools Dude Who Tried To Teach Her About Sports

Published by Huffington Post on Thu, 01 Sep 2016

Mansplainers are no match for journalist Erin Riley. On Tuesday, the writer from Sydney, Australia, reacted on Twitter to a piece from The Herald Sun about wages for women in the Australian Football League (AFL). Riley, whose work largely focuses on gender and sports, called out the pay gap between men and women who play in the AFL, and created a chart to break down the lack of equality within the league.Absolutely shameful. Most of the players will get $5000. That's *not even minimum wage* https://t.co/H2JA6BARhY Erin Riley (@erinrileyau) August 30, 2016 Some useful information about the AFL Women's League payment arrangements. pic.twitter.com/SNNK1kMeFY Erin Riley (@erinrileyau) August 30, 2016 Pay women a full time, living wage for the work they're doing. That's all we want #fairpayforwomensfooty Erin Riley (@erinrileyau) August 31, 2016 Soon, Riley received a flood of negative responses (mostly from men, she tweeted), all offering excuses for not giving women in the AFL fair pay.Riley didnt back down though, and her later tweets were A+.Why is a woman less entitled to fair pay now than a man is' Not like the men being paid have laboured for a century https://t.co/CpFd2VdFW2 Erin Riley (@erinrileyau) August 31, 2016 Apparently saying the AFL should invest in its product means I don't have "basic business understanding" https://t.co/enyXS6T7Pt Erin Riley (@erinrileyau) August 31, 2016 Hahaha, pointing out pay discrepancy based on gender is apparently "playing the sexist card" https://t.co/MxEkPuq7LC Erin Riley (@erinrileyau) August 31, 2016 If I had a dollar for every time today someone's said "don't make the discrepancies in pay between male and female players about gender"... Erin Riley (@erinrileyau) August 31, 2016 But one particular tweet truly shined. When a man jumped into Rileys mentions with some knowledge about the AFL ' and doubts about Rileys own knowledge on the subject she had been discussing ' she shut it right down.@erinrileyau You may not be aware that when the men's league started they weren't full professionals - it took close to 100 years for that. Jacob Anson (@jakeanson) August 31, 2016 I must have missed that while getting my degree in sports history, with a thesis on the development of Aussie Rules https://t.co/wriYrFIXNL Erin Riley (@erinrileyau) September 1, 2016 The man later told Riley in a tweet that he didnt mean to be patronizing and that she sparked a worthy debate.@erinrileyau I wan't intending to be patronizing. It's a genuinely good conversation to have & your article is stimulating a worthy debate. Jacob Anson (@jakeanson) September 1, 2016 And thats how you handle ' and engage with ' a mansplainer.H/T BuzzFeed -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.
