FedEx Cup Standings 2016: Points, Playoff Info After Deutsche Bank Championship

Published by Bleacher Report on Tue, 06 Sep 2016

With his win at the 2016 Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday, Rory McIlroy surged into fourth place in the FedEx Cup standings with two more playoff events to play.McIlroy finished the tournament at 15 under par, two shots ahead of Paul Casey.Jimmy Walker (12 under) came in third, and Adam Scott (11 under) finished in fourth, while Patrick Reed, Fabian Gomez and James Hahn tied for fifth at 10 under. As a result of his fifth-place finish, Reed retained his spot atop the FedEx Cup standings. Jason Day is 566 points behind in second place, per the PGA Tour's official website:McIlroy got back into contention Monday, but he still has a long way to go to win his first FedEx Cup title. In 2012, he won the Deutsche Bank Championship and followed with a victory at the BMW Championship, yet that wasn't enough to get the job done in the end. Brandt Snedeker earned the title after winning the Tour Championship.McIlroy, who has an 860-point gap to close, admitted the FedEx Cup is on his career checklist."It is one of the last things I want on my CV is to win the FedEx Cup," he said, per Philip Reid of the Irish Times. "I have won Race to Dubais, and I have won order of merits and been a money winner on the PGA Tour but never lifted the FedEx Cup itself."Reigning FedEx Cup champion Jordan Spieth had a Deutsche Bank Championship to forget, finishing in a tie for 21st. While his tournament wasn't an abject failure, he spent the final two days well behind the leaders, with little hope of adding a third PGA Tour title to his 2016 resume. As a result, he slipped from fifth to sixth in the FedEx Cup standings. If recent history is an indicator, though, Spieth's fortunes may be turning around soon, per Golf Channel's Justin Ray:Since the PGA Tour first handed out the FedEx Cup in 2007, no golfer has successfully defended his crown. Spieth could potentially buck the trend. In order to do so, though, he'll need to get at least one more win before the end of the season. The 23-year-old will look to move up in the standings at the BMW Championship, which tees off at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana, on Thursday. At last year's event, Day prevailed with relative ease, finishing six strokes ahead of Daniel Berger.McIlroy's climb from 38th to fourth place in the standings illustrated how much can change as the result of one tournament in the FedEx Cup playoffs, so the standings will likely look considerably different Sunday.
