Pliskova vs. Kerber: Score, Highlights from US Open Women's Final 2016

Published by Bleacher Report on Sat, 10 Sep 2016

For the second straight year, Serena Williams is absent from Arthur Ashe Stadium for the women's final of the U.S. Open.Williams followed up her semifinal loss to Roberta Vinci in 2015 by dropping a straight-set match to 10th seed Karolina Pliskova on Thursday. The big-serving 24-year-old Czech will square off against Germany's Angelique Kerber on Saturday for a chance at her first Grand Slam title.Win or lose, Kerber will move up from her No. 2 ranking to unseat Serena next week as the world No. 1. The 28-year-old is coming off a silver-medal performance at the Summer Olympics and won the first Grand Slam of her career at the Australian Open back in January. She was also a finalist for the first time at Wimbledon in July before falling to Williams. At Flushing Meadows this year, Kerber hasn't dropped a set on her path to the final. In the semifinal round, she took out a resurgent Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-3. For her part, Pliskova has played just one three-set match. She needed a third-set tiebreak to take out the other Williams sister, Venus, in the fourth round.Pliskova may be unfamiliar to most North American tennis fans, but Kerber knows who she is. In August, the Czech dispatched the German 6-3, 6-1 to win the title at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. All told, Kerber holds a 4-3 edge in head-to-head matchups. The women's final of the 2016 U.S. Open is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m. ET, after the conclusion of the men's doubles final.Join us here at that time for live updates of the action as it happens.
