Engage Professionals For Sport Devt, Not QuacksOpara-Thompson

Published by Leadership on Thu, 29 Sep 2016

Barcelona 92 Olympic Games 4100 bronze medallist, Christy Opara-Thompson, has called on the federal government to, as a matter of necessity, engage professionals to run the sport ministry, in order to bring about true development in the sector and reposition the nations sport ministry to become one which would contribute meaningfully to the nations economy.Speaking to newsmen during the official launching of her SOHO24 Foundation, the exercise physiologist and educationist noted that sports had the potential to make profound and positive impact on the nations economy, individuals and communities. All my life, I have always dreamt of giving back to the society. I have lived in United State of America for 20 years, but the fact is, I have to fulfill my hearts desire. That is why I am here. I basically believe in the dreams and future of Nigeria and her young people. Most training facilities across the country are in a poor and dilapidated state; the government and relevant stakeholders need to take sport more seriously. The youths in the country need support and role models to achieve their dreams. All they need is hope in God and perseverance. Also, Opara-Thompson disclosed that she would, in the next five years, aspire to make the project better.I have 30 boys in this camp who I train and feed daily and unconditionally. If I can get a bigger and befitting hostel to engage U-14 year in camp, so that we can begin to partner with schools to get them quality education, she said.
