Why we must preserve our cultural heritage

Published by Tribune on Sat, 02 Mar 2013

Cultural property is a movable or immovable property of great importance to the cultural heritage of every people. This refers to monuments of architecture, art or history, either religious or secular, archaeological sites, groups of buildings (historical or artistic interest). Others are works or arts, manuscripts, books and other objects of arts, as well as scientific collections.Recognising the importance of our cultural property to the cultural heritage of our people and the great damages most have suffered during either conflicts, physical, environmental factors, micro-organisms, insects and animals' infestation, it is highly imperative to protect and preserve our cultural property. Damage to our cultural properties belonging to any people whatsoever means damage to the cultural heritage of all mankind. Since each group of people makes its contribution to the culture of the world, the protection and preservation of our cultural heritage is of great importance to all peoples of the world. This spirit must be given priority so that our culture will not die or exchanged for other cultures. We must be determined to take all possible steps to protect our cultural property. The protection of cultural property shall comprise the safeguarding of and respect for such property. There is the need to highlight few steps that serve us well in safeguarding our cultural property. First, people must be refrain from using the property and its immediate surrounding. Second, people must be restrained from the use of the appliances in use for its protection to avoid its exposure to destruction or damages and third, we must prohibit, prevent and if necessary, put a stop to any form of theft, trespasses, pillage or misappropriation, and any act of vandalism directed against the cultural property. In recognition of our cultural heritage and its importance to the world, the cultural property and the material evidence about cultural heritage must be considered important enough to be actively conserved and to be the object of conservation policies. In the past, emphasis was on the conservation of historical buildings, archaeological sites, museums' collections, libraries, but it has now been extended into every conceivable aspect of heritage and our ways of life (preservation of yourself). It is now culturally much broader-looking at landscapes, entire urban areas, instead of individual buildings.Conservation, which is an art of making any object clean and stable for permanent exhibition and a way of maintaining the originality of the objects' cultural values without altering any material content and the aesthetic qualities, is the sole responsibility of museum conservators. And they must not condone any act that can damage, alter or weaken the chemical and physical compositions of the objects, which can either induce immediate or future deterioration. Conservation activities should not be the official responsibility of museum conservators alone. Everybody should be a conservator of his or her household and property. Amongst our natural property is what God has created with us. Some of us, out of negligence, care-free attitude, illiteracy, youthful exuberances, etc ignored our responsibilities to preserve our natural and cultural properties. We have imitated western world cultures to the detriment of our natural and cultural values, just for the sake of civilization. An observable example is our body complexion. The body complexion given to us by our creator is among our natural property which needs to be preserved all the time. An African of dark-complexion uses all manners of creams, medicated soaps, and bleaching re-agents to remove the colour and change the dark-complexion to white. Unfortunately, as nature cannot be cheated, the genetic material responsible for body complexion (melanin) cannot be changed or removed. Thus, the dark complexion automatically resuscitates, no matter the bleaching activities performed. Continuous bleaching forcefully destroys the body complexion, which has resulted in seeing an African man or woman possessing double or multiple colours. The originality of a Black African who is proudly referred to as 'Black and Shine' could not be maintained but finally lost. Our natural property is aesthetically of importance to us; it is our responsibility to maintain it. You as a conservator of thyself should be able to conserve yourself, your household and every other thing put in your custody. An environment given to you is one of your natural properties. How will you maintain its values or its originality' Agriculturally, some of our farmlands have lost their original values because they are not maintained naturally but through the use of chemicals, which destroy the natural and cultural values of the environments while its products are no longer sufficiently rich in the expected nutrients. The answer is not far fetched. We value certain things, certain places which we are familiar and which we think of being part of our heritage are precious to us. Some creatures are so outstanding that they are part and parcel of a universal heritage and are of importance to everyone. People ascribe values to these things thus they cannot be eliminated from their natural abode. This is because these valuable objects can still tell the posterity the indigenous technological advancement of our forefathers and how things were in the past.
