NFL Draft 2017: 1st-Round Mock Draft Based on Day 1 Scouting Combine Buzz

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 02 Mar 2017

Get your Wite-Out ready; with the 2017 NFL scouting combine underway, many of the narratives and rankings of this year's draft prospects that we have held for months are about to change as the players weigh in, interview with teams and participate in workouts. The workouts and drillswhat most people watch when they tune into the combinedon't begin until Friday. But on Wednesday, prospects were measured against one another, literally, while NFL executives and coaches spoke to the media. There was enough buzz generated during the first day of action that we have already seen some slight seismic activity in prospects' rankings, which is reflected in the below mock draft. Take a look and then read on for three storylines that emerged from Day 1.Leonard Fournette Moves UpWhen LSU running back Leonard Fournette arrived at the scouting combine for his weigh-in, he tipped the scales at 240, making him the heaviest back in Indianapolis this week:That could scare some teams, who may fear that the blazing speed Fournette showed off during his college career could be compromised if he's heavier than his playing weight. However, Fournette told Bleacher Report's Matt Miller that the 240 pounds was "water weight" and that "it will come off." He's still expecting to run the 40-yard dash in less than 4.45 seconds, per Miller. One team that is not likely to be deterred by Fournette's weigh-in is the New York Jets. In fact, in the last iteration of this mock draft, Fournette was projected to land with the Carolina Panthers at No. 8. Now, he's moved up two spots to head up the Jets backfield.New York's offense was lackluster at best in 2016. The Jets need to bring in a difference-maker who can jumpstart their game. Fournette can be for New York in 2017 what Ezekiel Elliott was for the Dallas Cowboys last season. With Kaepernick Out in San Francisco, QB Mitch Trubisky More Likely Than EverThe 49ers are a tricky team to predict at the No. 2 overall selection. With Myles Garrett virtually guaranteed to come off the board as the Cleveland Browns' first overall pick, that leaves any number of options for San Francisco. In a recent survey of mock drafts, some analysts could see new general manager John Lynch's team selecting a defensive playmaker such as safety Malik Hooker, corner Marshon Lattimore or defensive end Jonathan Allen. While any of those players would provide an instant upgrade to San Francisco's defense, with the news Wednesday from ESPN's Adam Schefter that Colin Kaepernick will opt out of his deal with the 49ers, suddenly San Francisco finds itself without a signal-caller:Could the 49ers add a quarterback in free agency' Of course. But given the state of the position on the roster, they'll also likely need to draft one, as well. This year's class is shallow, so they may as well get it done with their first selection so they have a prospect they can develop.Size Is Not an Issue for Deshaun WatsonOne of the things analysts have been negging on Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson for throughout the pre-draft process is his size. But as the prospects were measured on Wednesday, it was proved Watson is virtually the same size as fellow quarterback prospects Mitch Trubisky and Pat Mahomes, right down to his hands, as National Football Post's Dion Caputi pointed out on Twitter:Oh. Well then.According to scout Greg Gabriel, some scouts felt during the season that Watson was closer to 6'1" and 205 pounds. This is great news for Watson, who looks to be the second quarterback off the board after Trubisky. And in the latest version of this mock draft, he even goes in the top 10, landing with the Buffalo Bills.Buffalo is one of the teams that fairly obviously needs to draft a quarterback. If somehow Trubisky slips past the Niners and is available at No. 10, that could cause Watson to fall. But the news of his size on Wednesday is great for his draft stock.
