Sydney Sam not for Confederation Cup, says NFF

Published by Guardian on Thu, 25 Apr 2013

THE Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Wednesday said that its efforts to secure Nigerian-born Bayern Leverkusen midfielder, Sydney Sam, is not tied to the FIFA Confederations cup, which the Super Eagles will represent the continent of Africa in June. The NFF has begun efforts to secure the clearance of Sam, who has featured for the German youth side so as to make him eligible to play for Nigeria.NFF General Secretary, Musa Ahmadu said Wednesday in a chat with journalists that the federation had commenced subtle moves to secure the players nationality switch, stressing that there had been fruitful discussions with Sydney Sam and his agent, who has pledged his allegiance to the Nigeria national team.Amadu noted that though the process of securing the players' final release from FIFA would be a long one, but the federation would work hard to see that the issue is fast tracked. He further stressed that all the necessary documents were being put together for FIFA's eventual approval for Sam's release. The NFF secretary general, however, noted that the federation would continue with the process even if it was not able to complete it before the confederations cup, adding that the process of seeking his release was for a long-term project in the national team.'All I know is that there is a player called Sydney Sam, who plays for Bayern Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. I know that is a Nigerian, which makes him eligible to play for our country. He is left sided midfielder and a young man of 25 years. He endowed with a lot of creativity and goal scoring talents, which he has proved with Bundelsliga outfit.'We have been able to open some subtle discussion with the player and his agent and we are hopeful that we will able to get all the processes in place, particularly the player's irrevocable commitment to play for Nigeria, just as we did for Victor Moses and Shola Ameobi.'Once we are able to get the entire document in place, the processes at FIFA will be much easier because with FIFA once your documentation in correct and you have everything in place and ready with your documentations, they will fast rack the process of releasing the player,' Ahmadu stated.Speaking further, he said, 'we are hopeful that this will be possible. But I don't want to hinge everything on the confederation cup as if that is the only reason why we want to get Sydney Sam. The whole thing is a long process for a long-term project. If we are able to get him before the confederation cup, fine, but if not, we will continue with the process because we want him for a long-term project with the Super eagles. We will try as much as possible to try and see that this process is completed within a shortest period of time.
