Ekiti PDP condemns alleged violence against members

Published by Guardian on Mon, 06 May 2013

EKITI State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that it would no longer fold its hands and watch what the party described as 'unwarranted violence and killing of our members by the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).'The party said it was combat ready to defend its members, according to the chairman of the party in the state, Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe. He said that party would henceforth reply 'fire-for-fire' any attack launched against any of its members in the state by members of the ruling party. He said: 'We have been given the marching order from Abuja to reply ACN, fire-for-fire. They don't have monopoly of violence but we are only being conscious of the fact that we didn't want to destabilise Ekiti. But henceforth, we will no longer tolerate this act of brigandage.'Ogundipe, who addressed the party members that followed Prince Adeyeye, former publicity secretary of Afenifere, to collect a letter of intent to contest the governorship election in 2014, criticised the state government for allegedly destroying the billboards of PDP aspirants, saying such violence would no longer be tolerated by the party.Adeyeye, who used the occasion to commission his campaign office in Ajilosun Area of Ado Ekiti, promised that if elected as the governor in 2014, he would depend largely on the local talents to develop the state rather than 'importing' people from overseas.According to him, the former Premier of the defunct Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, explored local talents and those that were familiar with the plights of the grassroots to develop the region.'I am ready to tap the local talents in Ekiti; those that are familiar with the plights of the people to develop our dear state if elected,' he said.'I believe in party supremacy. I will compose my cabinet by using those that helped us during electioneering. I will not import people from anywhere.'Importation of brains, to me, is of no use. There a lot of talents in Ekiti that people can rely on, even among the PDP state working committee that you can use.'Chief Obafemi Awolowo performed wonders in the old Western Region by making use of local talents, not the foreign-based people.'Adeyeye promised to use his platform, Prince Adedayo Adeyeye Movement (PAAM), to unite the PDP, to be able to rescue power from the ACN in the coming election.'I am going to unite all the PDP members with this platform. I don't believe in sectionalism. PDP, to me, is one, and I am confident that with unity that is fast gaining ground in our party, ACN is gone in Ekiti in 2014,' he said.
