La Liga Table 2017: Sunday's Week 31 Results and Updated Standings

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 10 Apr 2017

Eibar leapfrogged rivals Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad into sixth place in La Liga after beating hosts Celta Vigo at theEstadio Municipal deBalaidos on Sunday. On the same day, Valencia moved up to 12th by heaping more misery on relegation candidates Granada.Elsewhere, there was a big win for Las Palmas, who remain on the trail of Los Che after thrashing Real Betis. Meanwhile, bottom side Osasuna earned their second win in a week, this time at the expense of Leganes at El Sadar Stadium in Pamplona. Here are the results from Sunday's matches:Here's what those results mean for the standings:RecapEibar were well-organised defensively against Celta but won thanks to their underrated quality in attackexemplified by the away side's first goal.Kike Garcia responded sharply to a smart header down by forward Sergi Enrich to guide the ball past the opposing 'keeper. Eibar doubled their lead on 51 minutes when left-back Antonio Luna played through Pedro Leon, whose low shot precisely found the bottom corner.Former Real Madrid winger Leon has become a regular source of goals from midfield this season, per OptaJose:Leon's quality is one reason why this resourceful Eibar squad looks a strong bet to finish in the European places.Ironically, it was a former Celta midfielder, Santi Mina, who helped Valencia see off Granada. Mina found the net after Simone Zaza had bagged a brace for the visitors.Ezequiel Ponce got one back for Granada on 65 minutes, but this team still looks destined for the drop. The evening ended with Las Palmas producing some exquisite football in front of their home fans. The hosts routinely weaved through the Betis defence with slick passes between the lines. It helped that Las Palmas packed considerable quality and threat in forward areas, withKevin-Prince Boateng and Jonathan Viera both getting on the scoresheet. For Boateng, his goal continued a solid scoring run in Spain's top flight this season, per La Liga's official Twitter account:Boateng has had an excellent debut season for Las Palmas, while Viera has continued to develop his game. The 27-year-old attacking midfielder has been his club's catalyst in attack, both as a scorer and provider of goals, according to OptaJose:Jese Rodriguez scored from the penalty spot for Las Palmas with seven minutes left, before Rafa Navarro notched a classy late response for Betis, who are suddenly free-falling but still have a nine-point cushion above the bottom three. However, Sid Lowe of the Guardian believes this team may still be in trouble yet:Lowe has a point considering Sporting Gijon have played a game fewer than Betis in 18th place. One relegation spot is already as good as filled, despite Osasuna winning again. Technically gifted forward Sergio Leon got both the goals afterDimitrios Siovas had opened the scoring for Leganes.Yahoo Sport UK's Andrew Gaffney lauded the value Leon will represent on the market once Osasuna's fate is confirmed:Osasuna's upturn in form may have come too late, but Eibar's ability to punch above their weight doesn't look like ending anytime soon. Meanwhile, Valencia are picking up points at the right time, while Betis need to end their losing run before it becomes too damaging.
