AFL Round 4 Betting Preview: Game Odds, Trends, Analysis for Week Ahead

Published by Bleacher Report on Wed, 12 Apr 2017

AFL fans will be treated to five days of football over the Easter weekend for the very first time, with Round 4 starting in Perth on Thursday night and ending with the traditional Easter Monday clash between Hawthorn and Geelong at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.Hawthorn and Geelong have been the pre-eminent rivalry of this decade, and there is an enormous amount at stake for the Hawks, who find themselves at 0-3 and under massive scrutiny for their cavalier trading in the offseason. They start as $2.94 AUD outsiders, according to AustralianGambling.com.au, which is the longest price they have started in an AFL match since the 2011 preliminary final. The unbeaten Cats are at $1.41.These two teams have played 19 times since the Hawks upset the Cats when they were similar odds in the 2008 Grand Final. Geelong have won 14 of those matches and Hawthorn five, but 11 of them have been decided by 10 points or fewer.West Coast and Sydney have shared a similarly epic rivalry in the previous decades, playing back-to-back Grand Finals decided by less than a kick. But those days will be a long way from the minds of Sydney fans, who see their team 0-3 for the first time since 1999.West Coast may have suffered a shock loss to Richmond last week, but they go into this match as the $1.35 betting favorites despite having lost nine of their past 10 matches against the Swans. Sydney were stunned by their one-point loss to Collingwood last week, but hampered by injury they look little like the side which contested the Grand Final only six months ago. They are $3.21 to cause an upset here.Good Friday footy's first incarnation pits North Melbourne against Western Bulldogs in what both teams hope can become a traditional match in the coming years. The Bulldogs are coming off a huge shock when they lost to the struggling Fremantle Dockers last week but are listed at $1.29 to continue the Kangaroos' winless start to the season. The Roos haven't been terrible despite dropping their first three, and they do look somewhat over the odds at $3.62.Melbourne cost themselves victory against Geelong last week with their inaccurate kicking for goal but get the chance to bounce back as $1.36 favorites against the Fremantle Dockers at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. The Dockers may have beaten the Dogs last week but have few friends in the betting here and are $3.18.Port Adelaide's winning start to the year came to an end when they were beaten in a dramatic Showdown by Adelaide last week and they will look to atone when they travel to Canberra to confront the premiership favorites, the GWS Giants. The Giants are $1.30 to win that match with the Power at $3.55.Adelaide are the shortest-priced favorite of the round as the unbeaten Crows confront Essendon at Adelaide Oval at $1.14. The Bombers were beaten by 82 points when they played the Crows last and are $5.80.The other Saturday night match, which sees Carlton hosting the Gold Coast Suns, is considerably harder to predict. The Suns are coming off a brilliant victory over Hawthorn and are $1.75 to win just their third match at Etihad Stadium in 14 attempts. The Blues are coming off their first win of the season against Essendon and are $2.10.Sunday's match between St Kilda and Collingwood at the same venue is also expected to be tight The Magpies are $1.80 favorites with the Saints at $2.02.In the remaining match, Richmond are $1.38 to win their fourth straight game to start the year, which would be the first time they have dome that since 1995. The Lions have lost seven straight matches at the Gabba against the Tigers and are $3.08.
