John Lynch Says 49ers Are 'Open for Business' on Trading No. 2 Pick in NFL Draft

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 13 Apr 2017

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch confirmed the team has received interest in trading for the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft.KNBR's Kevin Jones provided comments from Lynch's press conference Wednesday:There's the traditional trade chart. We've got one of our own. We know how we value that. As I've said, we're open for business. We'll listen to anything. But I've always said you don't like being a 2-14 team, but you like having the second pick. Because I think it puts you in the drivers seat. A lot of options at your disposal. And we'll explore every single one of them.Lynch's statements come after Draft Analyst'sTroy Paulinereported the 49ers are considering selecting LSU tailback Leonard Fournette second overall. That report raised questions about whether San Francisco was trying to spark interest in the No. 2 pick, since the team recentlysignedTim Hightower and still has Carlos Hyde on the roster.TheSan Jose Mercury News' Tim Kawakami was among the skeptics:It would make sense for Lynch to try to create a bidding war for the second overall selection. The 49ers are coming off a 2-14 season in which it became clear the team has numerous personnel issues to address.Football Outsidersranked San Francisco 23rd in offensive efficiency and 28th in defensive efficiency. When the Cleveland Browns sent the No. 2 pick to the Philadelphia Eagles last year, theyreceivedthe Eagles' 2016 first, third and fourth-round picks as well as Philadelphia's first-round pick in 2017 and second-round pick in 2018.Executing a similar deal would give the 49ers more bites at the apple to improve the roster. Should they keep the No. 2 pick, they'd still have a great chance to land an impact player who can help hasten their rebuild. For more news, rumors and related stories about the San Francisco 49ers and the NFL,check out theNFLand49ersstreams on Bleacher Report's app.
