DeShone Kizer Has 'Diva Qualities' According to Anonymous AFC Head Coach

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 13 Apr 2017

Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer may slide during the 2017 NFL draft because of concerns about his personality compared to fellow top QB prospects, including Mitchell Trubisky and Deshaun Watson.Albert Breer of The MMQB passed along comments from an unnamed AFC head coach, who praised the Fighting Irish star's on-field talent but questioned his intangibles."He's got the size, the arm talent and he's very bright," the coach said. "But there's a disconnect there. There are diva qualities there, and he seems to get voices in his head, like he's fighting who he is. And once the cycle starts, he can't get himself right."Breer noted the latest information from sources around the league suggests Kizer could fall out of the first round and end up being the fourth or fifth quarterback off the board. That means he may have been leapfrogged by Patrick Mahomes II and Davis Webb in the QB pecking order.Bleacher Report'sMatt Millerrated the Notre Dame standout as the second-best quarterback and the No. 17 overall prospect on his post-combine big board.Irish head coach Brian Kelly made an appearance onSirius XM NFL Radioin early April and stated the QB should have stayed in South Bend for at least one more year, perLaken Litmanof theIndianapolis Star.Well, he still should be in college. You know, but the circumstances are such that you have to make business decisions and, you know, he felt like it was in his best interest and Im going to support him and his decision. But the reality of it is he needs more football. He needs more time to grow in so many areas, not just on the field but off the field. Hes a great kid, hes got great character.Douglas Farmerof NBC Sports passed along Kizer's response from an ESPN Chicago 1000 radio spot:It's honestly the truth. I have two more years available [of college eligibility]. I'm only 21 years of age. There is a lot of growth for me. There's a lot of growth for everyone in this draft. There's a lot of guys out there who had to make big adjustments as they move into the NFL, and I know it. That's why I'm not the No. 1 quarterback guaranteed walking into this draft as we speak.Ultimately, the entire quarterback situation is a bit muddled heading into the draft. Trubisky is the most common choice as the first player from the position taken, but exactly where the North Carolina prospect will land varies widely, ranging from the first overall pick to the middle of Round 1.The longer it takes for the first QB to get selected, the more likely it becomes Kizer won't end up getting picked in the opening round. That's especially true if he's fallen behind the likes of Mahomes and Webb in addition to Trubisky and Watson. For more news, rumors and related stories about DeShone Kizer, Notre Dame football and the NFL draft, check out the college football and NFL streams on Bleacher Report's app.
