Verbatim Iconic Award For Maikasuwa Well Deserved

Published by Leadership on Fri, 14 Apr 2017

The iconic award given to Dr. Salisu Abubakar Maikasuwa, by the Verbatim Magazine, produced by former editors of the Newswatch is a well deserved one. The award was given to Maikasuwa for his historic effort when he successfully supervised the inauguration of the current National Assembly in 2015 despite many challenges.Dr. Sola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara emerged as Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representative respectively at the end of that historic inauguration which is still a hot subject of discussion in high quarters.Maikasuwa was one of the 23 persons who received the award from the Magazine at a well attended ceremony which was held at the Sheraton hotel last week Thursday. According to the citation read at the event by the EditorinChief of the magazine, Maikasuwa was unanimously chosen and given the iconic award for his miraculous performance as the CNA who made it possible for the election of the principal officers of the National Assembly. The editors felt that Maikasuwas handling of the inauguration of the assembly in June 2015 was a miraculous achievement worthy of recognition.Maikasuwa who recently stepped aside as the CNA was described as a miracle worker by the magazine due to his administrative revolution at the National Assembly through his visionary leadership qualities. The appointment of Maikasuwa as the CNA, was a fitting tribute for his meritorious services to the nation within the last ten years.Dr. Maikasuwa not only successfully supervised the 8th National Assembly inauguration but had led his team to produce an efficient bureaucracy manned by capable, competent and efficient officers who assisted him in implementing his revolutionary policies at the National Assembly bureaucracy. His apolitical status, humility and loyalty helped Dr. Maikasuwa to endear himself to his staff and political bosses. He also introduced far reaching reforms that impacted positively on the National Assembly, which endeared him to his staff. The editors said in his citation that among his numerous achievements Dr. Maikasuwa will perhaps be remembered mostly as the man who made it possible for the emergence of Dr. Bukola Saraki and Honourable Yakubu Dogara to emerge president and speaker of the House of Representatives respectively. Maikasuwa achieved the feat, against positions of supreme powers in the ruling party, APC, by insisting on doing the right thing at the right time. What he did at the National Assembly in 2015 was a miracle of sort.A Masters Degree holder in Public Administration and Policy Analysis from the University of Jos, Alhaji Salisu Abubakar Maikasuwa became the seventh indigenous clerk to the National Assembly when he formerly took over from Mr. Oluyemi Ogunyomi on 16th August, 2010. Born with blue blood on the 4th of March, 1958 to Abubakar and Fatimah Maikasuwa of the Keffi royalty, he had his early years of socialization built on the concrete foundations of sound Islamic and Western education.Salisu is now the proud owner of a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Public Policy Analysis from the Nasarawa State University, Keffi. The certificate is another milestone Maikasuwas life. Maikasuwa, it will be recalled, had studied for his second degree at the University of Jos, in 1984, while he bagged a M. Sc. In Public Administration and Policy. He did his first degree at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in 1980, where he got a B.Sc. in sociology.Maikasuwas present engagement as a high profile lecturer did not come as a surprise especially to those close to this simple and easy-going administrator turned lecturer who had within a short period successfully adjusted himself in his new environment in the university system at Keffi. The former CNA has been engaged in academic activities since the early 1980s through student activism and delivering of speeches at different fora within the past 30 years or so.Since he stepped aside as the CNA a lot of water has passed under the bride. Apart from concluding his academic desire of becoming a Doctorate Degree holder, Dr. Maikasuwa recently floated a Non-Governmental organization (NGO), which has to do with a matter close to his heart-parliamentary practice. He is now the president of an initiative concerned with the ethos of democracy, aptly titled-Initiative for Entrenchment of Parliamentary Practice and Democracy. The NGO is concerned with issues related to deepening of democratic practices and will partner with other stakeholders to reposition the nations legislative assemblies for sustainable development of the nation. It will also facilitate a more coordinate approach for training of parliamentarians and their support staff, and will help to create a corps of technically competent and professionally committed staff for the legislative houses.
