The rise of Gary Cohn, from Midwestern kid to Goldman Sachs boss ' and now key adviser to President Trump (GS)

Published by Business Insider on Fri, 14 Apr 2017

Gary Cohn, the former chief operating officer and president of Goldman Sachs, is growing his influence in the Trump administration as thedirector of the National Economic Council.President Donald Trump recently reversed his opinions on key economic issues, including labelingChina a currency manipulator, and whetherFederal ReserveChair Janet Yellen was a essentially a political stooge. These turnarounds signaled that some of Trump's hardline populist and "economic nationalist" stances are being swayed by Cohnand others with Wall Street experience that have a more pragmatic view on things.Cohn'sposition in Washington marks the latest stage in a rather incredible journey. As a kidwith dyslexia who grew up in a middle-class family in Ohio, no one would've expected Cohn to reach the heights he has in his professional career. As Cohn continues thisnew phase of his career, here are some of the most interesting snippets from his rise to the top.Prashanth Perumal contributed to an earlier version of this story.Cohn's grandfather was a Polish immigrant who moved to the US on his own as a 13-year-old with $8 in his pocket. He worked three jobs, was an apprentice electrician, and ended up opening his own business. Cohn would later work there.Source: Goldman SachsCohn grew up in Cleveland in the 1960s in a middle-class family. He 'bounced around from school to school because really no one understood how to deal with a dyslexic kid,' he told colleague Jake Siewart in a podcast.Source: Goldman SachsA teacher told Cohn's parents that 'if they were really lucky and spent a lot of time' with Cohn, he might 'grow up to be a truck driver.'Source: Business InsiderSee the rest of the story at Business Insider
