Jadeveon Clowney's Contract Option Exercised by Texans

The Houston Texans exercised their fifth-year option on defensive end Jadeveon Clowney on Friday, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.By picking up the option, the Texans ensured that they will retain Clowney for the 2018 season.The 2016 campaign was Clowney's best in the NFL, as he registered career highs with 52 tackles and 6.0 sacks while appearing in 14 games.Clowney also appeared in both of Houston's playoff games and recorded an interception.After getting selected No. 1 overall by the Texans in the 2014 NFL draft out of South Carolina, Clowney struggled to find his footing due largely to injuries.He played only four games as a rookie before appearing in 13 during his second season.Clowney improved as a pass-rusher last season and became a force against the run for the NFL's leading defense in terms of total yardage allowed.While the Texans will likely look to reach a long-term deal with the 24-year-old, picking up his option gives them more time to do so.For more news, rumors and related stories about Jadeveon Clowney, the Houston Texans and the NFL,check out the NFL and Texansstreams onBleacher Report's app.
