Warren Beatty opens up about what really happened during the epic Oscars screwup

Published by Business Insider on Mon, 17 Apr 2017

Warren Beatty addressed this year's baffling Oscars mix-up in a recent interview with Graham Norton. Beatty, who was presenting the award for Best Picture alongside Faye Dunaway when La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner, told the Graham Norton Show audience and panel that he initially thought there had simply been a misprint."I thought, well, maybe this is a misprint, you know'" Beatty told Norton. "And then, I shouldn't foul up the show because someone made a little error." When Norton suggested that Beatty appeared to pass the awkwardness to Dunaway, he said that assumption was not correct."No, no, no," he said. "My instructions were take the envelope when I walked out. I couldn't have it before that. And then I go out, then I say something. And then, I open the envelope, and then I give it to Faye, and she then says what it says." Despite the backstage "chaos," Beatty added, the screwup was not the only thing people were talking about that night. "People talk about themselves," Beatty reminded Norton.Accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers issued back-to-back apologies for the Moonlight/La La Land confusion in February, taking full responsibility. "PwC takes full responsibility for the series of mistakes and breaches of established protocols during last night's Oscars," the firm's second statement to Deadline said. "PwC partner Brian Cullinan mistakenly handed the back-up envelope for Actress in a Leading Role instead of the envelope for Best Picture to presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.Once the error occurred, protocols for correcting it were not followed through quickly enough by Mr. Cullinan or his partner."Previously, noted Oscars giggler Ryan Gosling explained the reason behind said giggling. You can watch the interviewbelow:SEE ALSO:How the best movie of the year so far, 'The Lost City of Z,' almost fell apartJoin the conversation about this storyNOW WATCH: I switched from Mac to Windows and I'm never going back ' here's why
