Gina Miller is raising hundreds of thousands to support MPs opposed to a hard Brexit

Published by Business Insider on Thu, 20 Apr 2017

LONDON ' Gina Miller, the woman who successfully forced a parliamentary vote on triggering Article 50, is raising hundreds of thousands of pounds to lead a new cross-party tactical voting campaign designed to preventa 'Hard Brexit'.Miller on Wednesday launched a crowdfunding page to Support the country's biggest tactical voting drive ever and stop Extreme Brexit."Miller has already raised close to 100,000 after just one day. She told Business Insider that she has alsosecured other large donations from individuals opposed to an extreme Brexit."We hope to raise at least a couple of hundred thousand pounds from small donations and we also have support from bigger donors as well," she told BI."But this is not just about finances. This is about corralling financial support but also technical support. We will have a wide team of people working on this."The campaign, which is being led by Miller and a team of supporters, will seek to encourage voters to back MPs who support allowing MPs a final "meaningful vote" on May's final Brexit deal. They plan to tour the country in support of sympathetic MPs from across the political spectrum.Miller said she would be willing to support the campaigns of Conservative MPs such as Anna Soubry, who have opposed prime minister Theresa May's hardline position on Brexit."May has talked about unity, but what is obviously important is that we don't want to end up in a place that isdisturbing where everyone has just one voice," she told BI. "Democracy is meant to be about people having different opinions and that is what we are working for."In a statement, Miller promised the "biggest tactical voting effort in history.""This election will be more important for the future of Britain than any in living memory," she said."How people decide to vote is vital. To that end we want to build the biggest tactical voting effort in UK history to ensure that candidates across the country that promise to do what is Best for Britain in the Brexit process get the extra support they need to win. If the deal the next government negotiates doesn't match up to our current terms, MPs should do what is Best for Britain and reject it. We will be asking MPs to pledge to keep an open mind and not be bullied into giving the next government a blank cheque for the final deal."Miller will officially launch the campaign at an event in London next Wednesday.Join the conversation about this storyNOW WATCH: Donald Tusk to UK: 'we already miss you
