Luis Severino Makes Yankees History Despite Loss Tuesday

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 20 Apr 2017

New York Yankees hurler Luis Severino lasted a career-high 8.0 innings in his start against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday evening. The 23-year-old allowed four runs (three earned) on the night and took the loss due to a lack of run support. Despite the result, he struck out 10 batters and walked none, becoming the youngest to do so in team history, per the Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN.com). Randy Johnson was the last Yankees pitcher of any age to go at least eight innings while striking out at least 10 and walking none.Severino didn't enter spring training a lock to earn a spot in the starting rotation, but a solid spring led to him joining the likes of Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda and Jordan Montgomery. While he owns just a 4.05 ERA through three starts this season, Severino has pitched pretty well.Through 20.0 innings, he's notched 27 strikeouts while issuing just two walks. His biggest bugaboo thus far remains the long ball, allowing four in his three starts. The entire Yankees' starting rotation has performed well early in the season, assisting in the team's surprisingly good start to the campaign. New York sits 9-5 prior to the result of Wednesday's game, in a three-way tie for the top spot in the American League East.Severino is scheduled to take the hill again on Tuesday against the Boston Red Sox, looking to get back in the win column to uneven his 1-1 record through three turns.
