Be Bold To Expose More Looters, Methodist Bishop Tasks Journalists

The Methodist Bishop of Ikono Diocese Rev Usen Akpanenua has admonished journalists in the coutry to be bold and take advantage of the existing press freedom to expose more corrupt men and women hindering the development of the country.Bishop Akpanenua gave the charge yesterday during a thanksgiving service organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalist in Akwa Ibom to seek the face of God in its affairs during the year at the Christ Methodist Church Cathedral Ibiaku Ntok Okpo in Ikono local Government council area of the state.The Cleric said that, through in-depth investigative reportage, members of the fourth estate of realm has unearthed massive corruption and excesses of the politician, urging them not to be intimated in exposing the wrongs in society.He noted that society sees the media as their saviour in the face of tyranny and injustices and urged them to be bold in order to correct the wrongs in society.According to him, Governments that tend to deny journalists their right are denying the freedom of expression rights. They deny the people the right to access information. This is a violation of human rights and such governments shall be held accountable.I am aware of the danger confronting newsmen, Journalism has become a very dangerous profession more than ever before in human historySuch glorious service to humanity does not go without sacrifices. Some of you have been killed, threatened, jailed, taken as hostages and intimidated by the very governments that ought to protect them.You people have become the targets for the modern armed conflicts and violence, but God has ordained it that way, I therefore urge you to keep us from darkness through your information and God in his infinite mercy will continue to protect and keep all of you he stated.On his part the state NUJ Chairman Elder Patrick Albert thanked the bishop and members of the Methodist Church in Ikono for their prayers and assured that the union in Akwa Ibom would continue to discharge its responsibility without fear of favour.
