The real reason breakfast is so important

Published by Business Insider on Mon, 24 Apr 2017

The INSIDER Summary:You should be eating breakfast ' even if it's just a small meal ' within two to threehours of waking up.Breakfastensures you don't overeat later in the day, and helpsstabilize blood sugar, which will prevent hunger pangs. It's a good idea to eat a meal that's high in fiber, protein, and healthy fats like avocado or nuts.No matter if you're a morning person or not, you should still be finding time to eat breakfast.According to nutritionist Dr. Lisa Young, skipping a morning meal often leads to overeating later in the day, as well as eating more unhealthy foods. That's because of both psychological reasons and physical reasons.Eatingbreakfast stops you from overeating later.Young says it's common for people who skip a meal to end up overeating later on. The thought process goes something like: "I didn't eat anything this morning, so I can have a biglunch."Instead, Young recommends eating something within the first two to three hoursof waking up. And it doesn't have to be a huge, sit-down meal. For example, if you wake up at 7amin order to get to your office at 9am, it's perfectly fine to wait until 9am to eat breakfast, and to have something like an apple and peanut butter or plain yogurt with fruit. It will also keep you full, longer.According to Young, eating something in the morning helps stabilize your blood sugar levels, which helps keep hunger at bay. If the first meal you're eating is at 1pm, chances are your blood sugar will be low, which will translate to you feeling especially hungry. That can lead to you grabbing the first thing you can get your hands on, whether that's a bag of chips or a candy bar.To avoid this, Young suggests eating a breakfast that's high in fiber, healthy fats (like avocado or nuts), and protein. All of these nutrients are essential in stabilizing blood sugar levels andmaintaining a feeling of fullness.Join the conversation about this storyNOW WATCH: Congress just voted to allow your internet provider to sell your online history and data 'here's how to protect your privacy
