Epilepsy drug increases birth defects risk

A drug to treat epilepsy and bi-polar condition has been blamed for severe malformations in as many as 4,100 children in France since 1967. These are the result from a study by French health authorities. The report was jointly issued by the French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines (ANSM) and the national health insurance administration. According to the study, women who took the drug during pregnancy to treat epilepsy were four times more likely to give birth to babies with congenital malformations, said the report.
