The Kansas City Chiefs pulled off a blockbuster trade with the Buffalo Bills to move up 17 spots in the 2017 NFL draft and draft quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the No. 10 pick. From a statistical standpoint, Mahomes immediately jumps out. He threw for 5,052 yards and 41 touchdowns in 2016 and 4,653 yards and 36 touchdowns in 2015. However, that production is largely the result of Texas Tech's aerial raid offense that threw the ball 653 times and ran the ball 389 times last year.Mahomes won't be running that type of spread offense at the NFL level, but there is plenty to like about his game beyond the inflated statistics.According to his NFL.com draft profile, Mahomes is 6'2" and "possesses NFL body type for work inside and out of the pocket."He will be able to stand inside the pocket, see over the line, set his feet and deliver at that height, and he consistently demonstrated throughout his college career he has the necessary arm strength to fit the ball into tight windows or hit deep balls over the top.Pro Football Focus' John Kosko thinks the Texas Tech product has an incredibly high ceiling:Mahomes is athletic enough to escape pressure in the pocket and make plays with his legs, accurate enough to find receivers on underneath routes and capable of connecting on big plays. That tendency to go big sometimes gets him in trouble, as NFL.com's Lance Zierlein described in the profile: "Mahomes' ability to improvise and extend plays can lead to big plays for his offense, but he will have to prove he can operate with better anticipation and be willing to take what the defense gives him in order to win from the pocket."If he can learn to do that, he can start striving for the ceiling Kosko envisioned leading up to the draft. The Chiefs are a great landing spot for Mahomes because they still have Alex Smith as their starter, giving the Texas Tech standout at least one full season to develop before being asked to take over.
