Kano Is Suffering From Shortage Of Pro Bono LawyersGroup

Human Rights group have raised alarm, stating that Kano is suffering from shortage of Pro bono lawyers, revealing that only four lawyers are attached to the Legal Aid Council, office in Kano posit to cater for 15 million people in the state.The Programme Manager of Rule of Law and Empowerment Initiative, a nongovernmental organization, Mrs. Barbara Malaria in Kano said, the near absence of pro bono services has led to lack of access to justice, for indigent persons in KanoShe urge legal practitioners to provide more pro bono services to aid the speedy dispensation of justice.lack of adequate legal aids is the main reason for poor access to justice by indigents who could not provide legal representation despite a popular say that access to justice is not a privilege, rather a right.Malaria said, the group in a move to lend a helping hand in addressing the pressing needs for more free legal services opted to set up the board of governors of the Public Defenders Office in Kano.She said the office will be at the rescue of indigents, render alternative dispute resolutions and paralegal services.Speaking, the Chairperson of the board, Barrister Hussaina Aliyu Ibrahim assured that, the board will pursue vigorously the provision of pro bono services in the state, when it commences operation in May, 2017.
