George Osborne's first Evening Standard calls Brexit a 'historic mistake' and carries an unflattering cartoon of Theresa May

Published by Business Insider on Tue, 02 May 2017

LONDON ' The first edition of the London Evening Standard newspaper under George Osborne's editorship was published on Tuesday, complete with an unflattering cartoon depiction of Prime Minister Theresa May, an editorial criticising the Conservatives' "strong and stable" general election slogan, and a front-page splash titled "Brussels twists the knife on Brexit."Howthe former chancellor ' who steps down as Conservative MP for Tatton in June ' edits the London daily will be the source of much scrutiny, because it raises a number of conflict of interest issues. He is still a serving MP until the general election on June 8, raising questions of how he will cover news relating to his own party.Furthermore, Business Insider reports that he has earned in excess of 1,000,000 from speeches, advisory roles and donations from financial firms and international organisations since he stepped down as Chancellor last year, raising questions of how the paper will cover those firms. From the looks of things, Osborne isn't going to shy away from criticising the prime minister ' and the leader of his own party ' who sacked him as chancellor in July. Here's what the first edition looks like.Osborne arrived at the Standard's Kensington offices on Tuesday morning, telling reporters outside that he would lead an "informative and entertaining" paper.Tweet Embed:https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/859348516061278208George Osborne says he'll lead an informative and entertaining Evening Standard as he arrives on his first day https://t.co/XlbNJIi3rj pic.twitter.com/HAEbbM8trOHe was greeted by protests outside, largely from London taxi drivers who are concerned about his reported links with senior lobbyists at Uber.Tweet Embed:https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/859279452441804801Not quite the welcome outside the Evening Standard offices George Osborne will be hoping for as he arrives for his first day as editor pic.twitter.com/NLRf5fJjFGHe said that he would edit the paper "without fear or favour."Tweet Embed:https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/859285189956186112Excited about first day in new job @EveningStandard.
