Jets Won't Pick Up Calvin Pryor's Option After Drafting Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye

Published by Bleacher Report on Tue, 02 May 2017

The New York Jets have reportedly decided against picking up the fifth-year option on safety Calvin Pryor's contract.NFL Network's Ian Rapoport was the first to report New York's decision, and ESPN.com's Rich Cimini later confirmed. The move comes after the Jets selected safeties with their first two picks of the 2017 NFL draft in Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye. After the Jets picked Adams in the first round, Pryor expressed his excitement to team up with the former LSU standout:While Pryor will have that opportunity in 2017, his future with the team beyond that is now in doubt. The Jets selected Pryor with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft out of Louisville, and he has since started 38 games in three seasons.Pryor had 62 tackles with no interceptions last year. He has registered just two picks during his NFL career. The Jets tied for 25th in the league last season with 30 passing touchdowns allowed, and they tied for 29th with just eight interceptions.Adams and Maye combined for 10 career interceptions in college. Their arrival should give New York more playmaking ability in its secondary. The Jets now have a crowded depth chart at safety with Marcus Gilchrist also in the mix, which likely made the decision to not commit to Pryor beyond 2017 easier for the front office.
