Group renovates corps members quarters for school

Published by Guardian on Thu, 10 Mar 2011

THE ceremony elicited a lot of joy. Penultimate weekend, youth corps members, posted to Item Community High School (ICHS), Abia State, heaved a sigh of relief as their official residence that had been destroyed by rainstorm, was renovated and handed over to the schools authority before a gathering of important dignitaries from the community. Also excited by the development were the traditional rulers of the community. The current corps members, who described themselves as lucky, said their predecessors were not so favoured with a refurbished building.  At the ceremony, the President of Item Union Lagos (IUL), Mr. Wilson Mbah, recalled how a passionate appeal by the Principal of the school; Mrs. Florence Egbo, last year, touched members of his union, who then voluntarily embarked on a fund raising initiative on the project because the school was one the oldest secondary schools established in the former Eastern Region, in todays Bende Local Government Council in Abia state. The importance of education has made it imperative for the schools founding fathers to sacrifice their personal gains towards building this institution. It is that same spirit that had moved our union to embark on this project that has seen this building, which plays important role in upbringing of the students, being handed over as part of our contribution to growth of education in our land.He stated that until every association and group begins to appreciate the role of education in shaping the minds of the young ones, correcting some of the societal ills would still be posing some problem.  I call on people of goodwill to set aside a fraction of their incomes to helping schools in their neighborhood acquire those things that they lack, which will promote learning in their immediate environment, he said. The Principal noted: I urge other associations, especially the old boys of the school not to forget their Alma Mata. We as teachers and other supportive staff will continue to see to it that this school remain one of the best by bringing up products that will always make everyone associated with ICHS proud.
