ECOWAS Parliament Targets Donors Commitment By Years End

Published by Leadership on Sat, 18 Nov 2017

By Chikelu Chinelo, AbujaThe ECOWAS Parliament said it expects development partners commitment by the end of 2017 to fit into its programmes plan for the next three years. The secretary general of the parliament, Nelson Magbagbeola summarized this as the outcome of its first ever donor conference aimed at bridging financial and technical gaps constraining the effective implementation of its programmes. The parliament has a 3-year strategic programme targeted at achieving ECOWAS Vision 2020, the SDGs and the African Union 2030 Agenda. The programme runs throughout the fourth legislatures administration to end at 2020.Magbagbeola said some development partners have identified areas to engage with the parliament, and have scheduled bi-lateral meetings for next week, while others will review the parliaments strategic document/budget for ways to support the legislature.Since some of the development partners already have existing partnerships with the commission which they cannot modify at the moment, we will review partners plans and devise how they can support the parliament on legislative actions to implement some of our projects, clarified the secretary general. We will send the outcome report of this meeting to donors to make their comments. We will finalize and follow up, this way we have something concrete, added Magbagbeola. He also confirmed that disbursement of funds from donor partners will adhere to the partners financial guidelines. Stressing the fact that the parliament is not going cap-in-hand since it has its own resources derived from the community levy, via ECOWAS guidelines, ECOWAS have to follow whatever donors tell us of how to disburse their funds, he said. The secretary general says the outcome of the conference will be relayed to the plenary at the upcoming budget session to begin on November 21.The post ECOWAS Parliament Targets Donors Commitment By Years End appeared first on leadership.ng.
