Auburn President Steven Leath Says Bruce Pearl's Refusal to Talk 'Troublesome

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 23 Nov 2017

Auburn PresidentSteven Leath wrote an email in which he criticized the coaching staff of the Tigers men's basketball team after the school became embroiled in the bribery scandal that has impacted a number of NCAA programs.According to AL.com'sJames Crepea, Leath was addressing fans who have thrown their support behind head coach Bruce Pearl."There is no rush to judgement here and we have been working with the coach for weeks to find a solution to this difficult situation," Leath wrote. "Having three of his employees suspended or terminated is troublesome at best. His unwillingness to even talk to me about it is particularly troublesome."He went on to say he and the school possess information about the situation that hasn't reached the public and he "will make any decision based on facts, what is best for Auburn and not on emotion or perceptions from the past."Auburn fired assistant coach Chuck Person in October. Earlier this month, a federal grand juryindictedhim on charges of bribery, conspiracy and fraud, which he pleaded not guilty to.ESPN.com'sMark Schlabachreported the FBI was investigating Person's role in a scheme in which the bureau asserted he received payments for directing Auburn players to sign withLouis Martin Blazer III, a financial adviser from Pittsburgh. In one instance, the FBI recorded video of Person agreeing to accept $50,000 from Blazer. The FBI used a wiretap to listen to a phone call in which Person spoke to the mother of an unidentified player and suggested the player should work with Blazer, per Schlabach.Schlabach and Paula Lavignereported for ESPN.com on Nov. 8 that Pearl wasn't cooperating with Auburn as the school internally investigated the basketball program.According to the report, Auburn was considering firing Pearl if he didn't participate in the investigation.Pearl addressed the situation Wednesday."We are still working through the process," he said, per Auburn Undercover'sMichael Niziolek. "We're spending a lot of time with it. Not enough time to take us away from coaching and doing things we need to do. Again, we are working through the process. I feel good about the process. I hope it comes to some closure soon."The Tigers have won three of their first four games to start the 2017-18 season. Their next game is Friday night against the Winthrop Eagles.
