The extreme dieting regimen that self-help guru Tim Ferriss uses to stay lean

Published by Business Insider on Tue, 28 Nov 2017

Tim Ferriss, author of "The 4-Hour Workweek" and "Tribe of Mentors,"is a firm believer in ketogenic diets and fasting. Here's why he believes so firmly in it.The following is a transcript of the video.Disclaimer: Tim Ferriss is not a doctor. Please seek medical supervision before attempting to go on a fast.Tim Ferriss:My name is Tim Ferriss, angel investor and authorof books including "The 4-Hour Workweek" and the latest, "Tribe of Mentors."Fasting is of interestto me for medical use.For instance, there are a number of cancerresearchers who willdo extended fasts.Meaning 5 to 7days several timesper year to purgepre-cancerous cellsin the body, whichare not problematicnecessarily in and of themselves unlessthey then start to growout of control. And by limiting yourglucose intake, whetherthrough a ketogenicdiet for instance orjump-starting ketosisand staying in ketosisthrough fasting, some people believethat there arebenefits to that. And I certainly see, as someone who sufferedfrom Lyme disease, some very, very clear cognitivebenefits from entering a state of ketosis, which youcan do through a diet. And you think ofblood sugar that isoften the preferred fuelfor your brain and so on.But once you run out of carbohydrates thatyou've stored, that'swhen you start to usethat fat that we'reso good at storing. And fat can bebroken down, with the assistanceof the liver, intoan alternative fuelsource called ketones. So when you are in a"ketotic state," when youare generating ketones, that is called "ketosis." And you can get there through, say, fasting. You can also get there through eating a dietthat is very high in fatcalled, "the ketogenic," meaning producing,"genicgenesis" ketogenic diet. But fasting tome has become aroutine part of my month.I do a three-day contiguous fast every monthand then I do longer fasts throughout the yearwith supervision. And I'm doingblood tracking regularlyso that I know exactlywhere my glucose levelsand Ketone levels, as measured by BHB, areby using finger pricks. But, suffice to say, don't try it at homewithout professional supervision.Join the conversation about this story
