Bobby Roode Heel Turn Would Provide Needed Momentum After Loss vs. Dolph Ziggler

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 18 Dec 2017

Dolph Ziggler defeated Bobby Roode and Baron Corbin in a Triple Threat match at Clash of Champions on Sunday to win the United States Championship in front of a shocked Boston crowd, but the biggest takeaway from the match is that Roode is in need of a major character shift.Roode put on some of the best performances of his career during his time in NXT, and he was undoubtedly the top heel the brand had to offer. In addition to his excellent in-ring work, Roode's gimmick was that of a narcissistic jerk who looked down upon his opponents as well as the NXT Universe. He told anyone who would listen that he was the reason for NXT's success, and he cut countless fantastic promos in the process.Due largely to the popularity of his theme song, Roode was brought up to the main roster as a face. Rather than trying to combat the initial positive reaction Roode was bound to get, WWE went with it and embraced the situation.Roode has lost much of the momentum he had built up during his run as NXT champion, though, and he likely won't get it back by remaining in a face role.Despite his immense talent, Roode has seemed flat on the main roster. The creative team hasn't done him any favors in that regard by placing him in midcard feuds lacking heat against the likes of Corbin and Ziggler. While putting the United States Championship on Roode could have possibly been a step in the right direction, the fact that he came out on the losing end shouldn't hurt him much provided he is given the opportunity to show his true range as a performer. The U.S. title has elevated Superstars in the past, but it seems to more often act as an albatross that prevents talent from reaching the next level.Although the United States Championship could have potentially helped Roode in terms of giving him some direction, there wouldn't have been much intrigue surrounding a Canadian babyface being the U.S. titleholder.A reprisal of his "better-than-you" attitude from NXT as a heel may have changed that, but that is a direction Roode can still head toward even without the title. The midcard is virtually nonexistent on SmackDown, but building Roode into a strong heel could go a longway toward changing that. Also, with AJ Styles holding the WWE Championship, having Roode go heel would increase the chances of him moving into the main event scene in the near future.Roode has main event-level talent in all aspects, but the way he has been positioned since his call-up has prevented him from showing that off.He never looked out of place as a main eventer in NXT, and the case can be made that he even outshined Shinsuke Nakamura much of the time during their feud. With there being a lack of top heels on SmackDown, a turn makes sense for Roode in terms of preparing him to move up the card.Maintaining the status quo could further stagnate The Glorious One, and it would be a huge waste of a Superstar who should be a major asset to SmackDown Live.Listen toRing Rust Radiofor all of the hot wrestling topics.
