Eagles Coaches Studying Nick Foles' 2013 Film After Recent Struggles

Published by Bleacher Report on Wed, 03 Jan 2018

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson told reporters that he and his staff were reviewing old film from Nick Foles' past seasonsincluding his 2013 season with the Eagles, when Foles threw 27 touchdowns and just two interceptionsto best tailor the offense toward the quarterback's strengths, according to Tim McManus of ESPN.com.Pederson acknowledged the team may go to more hurry-up offense, as Foles had his most success in Chip Kelly's high-tempo offense in 2013."I think he does [thrive in it], I think any quarterback does," Pederson noted, per McManus. "Carson [Wentz] has obviously thrived in it when we go up-tempo. Something we'll look at and spend some time this week putting our guys in that position."Pederson is also reviewing film from Foles' time under Andy Reid in Philadelphia and his stint in St. Louis with the Rams as well."The quick-throw was there, a little play-action pass, the shotgun stuff," Pederson said of Foles' past play. "Those are all things that are in our system, and we might just have to dust a few more off and get that ready to go. And that's kind of what this week is for, to get some of those ideas and thoughts on paper and execute them this week in practice."There's no doubt that Foles, 28, has struggled in recent weeks. While he led the team to a win in Week 14 against the Rams after taking over for Carson Wentz following the incumbent starter's torn ACLand threw for237 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions the next week against the New York Giants in a 34-29 winhe's thrown for just 202 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in his last two appearances. That included completing just 46.9 percent of his passes in those starts (Foles played just one quarter in Week 17 against the Dallas Cowboys, a 6-0 loss in which the Eagles rested a number of starters and played others for a limited amount with the top overall seed in the NFC playoffs already secured). The adjustment from Wentz (arguably the MVP frontrunner before his injury) to Foles has turned the Eagles from a Super Bowl favorite to a team that will likely be an underdog when they host a divisionalround playoff game in two weeks. If Foles plays like he did down the stretch against the Rams or in the Giants game, the Eagles have the overall talent to still make a run to the Super Bowl. If the Foles who struggled mightily against the Raiders or Cowboys appears, however, it's hard to imagine the Eagles making any noise in the postseason, and the team could even consider turning to Nate Sudfeld at that point. But for now, the plan is to ride with Foles. My guy is Nick Foles, end of story,"Pederson textedIan Rapoportof NFL.com on Tuesday. Whether that story ends well for Philadelphia is another matter entirely.
