CONMESS: Akwa Ibom Doctors Threaten 3-Day Warning Strike

Doctors in Akwa Ibom State on Tuesday threatened to go on a three-day warning strike if their demand for Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) was not met.The state chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. John Udobang, said the association extended the ultimatum it earlier gave to employers of medical doctors and dentists for another two weeks owing to pleas by well-meaning members of the public.Udobang said at the NMAs emergency general meeting on Sunday, the association decided that the 21 days ultimatum given to employers of medical doctors in the state to implement the CONMESS circular and other issues, be extended for two weeks.He said, After a careful and meticulous deliberation, the NMA has unanimously resolved to extend the ultimatum for another two weeks in demonstration of their readiness to cooperate with government.The body also resolved that doctors in the state will proceed on a three-day warning strike if the issues in contention are not adequately resolved at the expiration of this extended ultimatum.It was learnt that the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ememabasi Bassey, who was represented at the meeting by the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Nath Adiakpan, appealed for an extension of time on the ultimatum.Some of the doctors demand that at least, four medical doctors be employed in a secondary health facility; training of house officers,and utility cars be given to medical doctors who are in Akwa Ibom State Government employ.
