Nigerian youths are suffering, smiling

President, National Youth Council of Nigeria, comrade Akeem Ayo Babalola, on Thursday, May 29, described Nigerian youth as being a bunch who smile amidst pathetic and deplorable condition, lamenting that things are not getting better because there is nobody to fight for them.Babalola stated this during a debate organised by the council to mark the nation's Democracy Day, entitled: Nigerian democracy: Are the youths actively involved''We the Nigerian youths are suffering and smiling because there is no messiah to fight for our rights. Those that are supposed to do so are fond of enriching themselves with the national cake, but we hope that one day we will get to the promised land.'Babalola, while encouraging youths to be peace ambassadors said: 'My fellow youths, whereever we are and whatever we are doing, let's always follow the anthem of peace movement guide. In every home, let peace reign, let every of our relationship be harmonious. We must say to tribalism and corruption.'He lauded the Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, for his administration's commitment to development of the state, adding that ' our generation is blessed with an uncommon gift of his Exellency.'Speaking on the topic, one of the guest speakers, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth and Sport, Mr G.T. Fawole, noted that the youth were active in Nigerian democracy, saying that the House of Representatives, for instance, is majorly made up of very powerful youths, who are playing active role in decision-making.Corroborating him, the Secretary to Ibadan South-East Local Government, Mr E.O Ige, said youths could be more active if they held their electorate accountable through asking them questions, voting them out during election and making suggestions.On the motive behind organising the debate, the Secretary of the council, comrade Olabode Olalekan, said the essence of the programme was to have an interactive session with public officials about issues that bother the youths.
