Convene security summit now, Yoruba in US, Canada counsel S/West govs

Published by Tribune on Wed, 04 Jun 2014

THE National Association of Egbe Omo Yoruba in the United States and Canada has advised the South- West governors to urgently convene a security summit. In a press statement issued in Washington DC and signed by the president and public affairs secretary, Agba-Akin Bolu Omodele and Dr Ayodeji Famuyide, respectively, the group stated that 'in the light of the worsening state of security in Nigeria, as a result of the activities of Boko Haram, the South-West governors should consider it exigent to convene a security summit, which should involve local and foreign security experts, security agencies, neighborhood watch groups, representatives of community development associations and relevant stakeholders, in order to appraise the security preparedness of the South-West and develop a comprehensive set of approaches, strategies, techniques and technologies similar to what are in place in cities, such as New York, Washington DC, London and western capital cities of the world, which should include residents' engagement and the ability of security agencies to nip in the bud any terrorist act before they are executed.'In expressing frustration at the Federal Government's inability to keep the people safe and eliminate Boko Haram, 'it is clear that the Federal Government is bereft of ideas on how to stem the tide of the Boko Haram with daily gory news of bomb blasts and widespread killings across the Northern parts of Nigeria, as recently recorded in Abuja, Kano and Jos, while the Chibok girls have been missing for about six weeks!'The association noted that the South-West is a unique part of Nigeria, which could be targeted 'remarkably the South-West, is densely populated and has numerous soft targets which if left unprotected and becomes vulnerable to similar attacks that have been recorded in other parts of Nigeria, it would have catastrophic impact on the South-West and the country.'The group also expressed its concern on how the Boko Haram had become a deadly force capable of carrying out attacks 'unfortunately, it appears there is a paradigm shift that indicates not if these terrorists would carry out their murderous and blood thirsty acts, but when, where and what scale.'We, therefore, cannot carry on with a business-as-usual attitude and casual approach, rather, a vigilant populace and government officials should place premium on safety and security of lives and property.
