The winning employee's 'worktitudes' (7)

Published by Tribune on Tue, 27 Sep 2011

Excellent Relationships:Seek to develop excellent relationships on the job.No matter what it takes, ensure that your employer is happy with you or your days on the job are numbered. His strengths, acting on God's inspiration produced and executed the idea that gave you a job in the first place. You were employed to cover up for areas where he lacks competence or the time to function. So stop looking for the flaws of your employer unless those flaws are standing in the way of what he employed you to do. That being the case, you need a heart-to-heart talk with him to let him know that it is not in his own interest to allow his personal foibles affect corporate performance; nothing personal. If the situation persists, rather than work against your conscience and competence, a situation that leaves everyone involved a loser, you may need to simply quit the job. If you spend enough time doing what you are paid to do, you are not likely to have enough time left for negativity. To succeed, you need people. The quality of your networth is a reflection of the quality of your network. Relationship management is a skill everyone needs to develop. The way you manage the relationships in your life will also determine how you manage your own life. Your colleagues (superiors or subordinates) deserve respect and care as much as you do. Treat your colleagues as you would love them to treat you. Reinforce all that is positive in the team and minimise the weaknesses, unless they are inimical to the success of the team. Listen when others are talking. Never underestimate anyone's intelligence no matter how low on the rung they are. Someone you despise now may become your life-saver in time to come! Enthrone everyone around you and they might collectively turn round to make you king!Devotion to the task. Your devotion on the job is what makes you a preferred employee. If you are not faithful in what belongs to another, you don't get yours! Do not just be committed to the establishment because it pays you a salary. Exhibit uncommon devotion to each assignment you are given. Whatever gets you to the top is what will keep you there. Even if you do not intend to stay long on the job, be grateful that you even have somewhere to go that confers the toga of responsibility on you! Until you find the job you love, love the job you've found! An elderly carpenter told his contractor-employer of his plans to retire to a more leisurely life with his family. The contractor was very sorry to see one of his most valuable workers go. But he asked the carpenter to do him a personal favour - build just one more house. As the work progressed, it was easy to see that the carpenter's heart was not in the work. Because no one was supervising the project, he resorted to shoddy workmanship and for the most part, used inferior materials. When the carpenter finished his work, the employer came to inspect the house. He handed the front-door key to the carpenter. 'This is your house' he said, 'my gift to you'. The carpenter was shell-shocked! If only he had known that he was building his own house, he would have done it differently. You are that carpenter. Each passing day, you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall in the house life intends to give you as a gift. What kind of materials are you using'You may work in an establishment, but you don't work for an establishment. No establishment is big enough to determine your value. The best any establishment can do for you is to add value to you.Your job, therefore, is only a platform for serving your true employers, God and yourself! If you want a salary higher than you are currently getting, earn it! If you work for your present employer as if you are God's employee, you will eventually earn a salary that only God can pay. A man of value is always in demand for the simple reason that even though value is in high demand, it is in short supply. If you truly want to be highly successful, be the employee you would love to hire!PostscriptThanks to members of the Business Church, Pastor Poju Oyemade and the Covenant Christian Centre, Muyiwa Onabolu, Ade Igbokoyi, Ogunleye Oladimeji, Abiodun Ayeni, Mike Adeyemo, Doyin Ogunbiyi, Christian Love, Funmi Odufuwa, Tinu Ayanniyi, J.F Olusegun, Yetunde Fashida, Dayspring Adenusi, Oladapo, Tuade, Faremi and a few others who chose to be anonymous. Your donations have made it possible to present 400 pillows to UCH. The presentation will be done this week or next. The dream of one pillow on 10,000 public hospital beds is on course! Be part of making life easier for someone in distress! Join the GIVE A PILLOW campaign!Dream makers never expire!Remember, the sky is not your limit, God is!
