The winning employee's 'worktitudes' (6)

Published by Tribune on Tue, 27 Sep 2011

A job is what you make it. There is no future in any job. The future is in the individual. Your future is in you, not in your job. The future you see, therefore, becomes the reason for your passion and enthusiasm on your present job. Even if you have not yet found the job you love, in the meantime, it is in your own interest to love the one you have found while you still have it! If you cannot do so, it is better to quit than make yourself consistently miserable while infecting others with your misery.T-ime spent on the job. Bankers are known to be well-paid. But most of them have no time for anything other than the work. Their lives are consumed by late working hours such that they hardly have time to enjoy a lot of the things they splash the money on! Most bank employees I know complain to high heavens about their jobs even though the pay is good and would make their friends green with envy! Don't waste your life on a job that totally takes over your life such that you have none left to be you!I-nspiration. Work for a dream, either yours or your employer's. The most fulfilling level of work is when your personal dreams match the corporate objectives of the company you work for. At that point, work becomes like play. It's the complete cure for the 'Monday morning blues'. Your creative juice flourishes and your productivity is constantly at a peak and you hardly need external motivation because you are completely self-motivated! As I had cause to say earlier, it is pointless working for an organisation whose dreams and values are diametrically opposed to yours.S-alary. A good pay packet is no doubt a great fillip to satisfaction. At the end of each month you go home with a good feeling that you have actually earned your pay. You have been adequately compensated for your sweat. The word salary is actually from the Latin word 'salarium' which was used to describe the practice in the Roman Empire where soldiers were paid in measures of salt according to rank. This they sold and whatever they got from it was their stipend for the period covered. This is where the expression to 'be worth one's weight in salt' is from. Since work has been described as the sweat of one's brow, the term salary was adopted to depict remuneration as an indication of the value of one's sweat or shall we say 'salt' (you know what your sweat tastes like don't you')F-amily. No one likes a job that does not allow him to have time for his family. A high income profile with a family that is falling apart is not a good thing. No employee can perform at his optimum when his family life is nothing but a nightmare. Know where and when to apply the brakes. You can never be truly adjudged successful until your spouse and children actually agree with the assessment. There is an instructive story of a man who was so absorbed in work that he hardly had time to be at home with his family. After a long time of trying to get his dad's attention without success, his 10-year old son asked him one day 'Dad, how much do you get paid per hour'' Wanting to impress his son, he replied, 'A whole $25!'. A few days afterwards, just before bedtime, the boy snuggled close to his father, slipped some crumpled dollar bills amounting to $25 into his hands and said, 'Dad, I'd like to buy one hour of your time tomorrow!'I'nnovation. Every employer appreciates an employee that does not always have to be told what to do. Get innovative on your job without putting your employer in trouble. An executive was hired to lead the reinventing process of a corporation. Unfortunately, he undertook a risk that set the company back by about $10million. Feeling very angry with himself, he opted to resign. On receiving his resignation, the chairman of the board summoned him to a meeting. He entered the chairman's office ready for the worst. The chairman motioned him to a seat and, said,'Young man, I understand from the letter in front of me that you want to leave the company''Yes sir,' the young man stuttered. 'I think it's only the proper thing for me to do at this stage.'With a stare that seemed to bore a hole in his skin, the chairman asked him, 'And what happens to the $10m that we just spent on your education'' He got the message. Make yourself an ideas bank on your job. It's a sure sign that you are constantly thinking about the progress of the organisation. To your employer, it's not about the mistakes you make, but what you refuse to do because you don't want to make mistakes!...continued.Remember, the sky is not your limit, God is!
