Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. - Ecclesiastes 8:11Friday August, 26 is a day like no other in our national history. It was the day the nation was hit with the twin tragedy of the bombing of the UN building in Abuja and the unprecedented flooding of Ibadan. Both resulted in monumental losses of human life and material resources.Unfortunately, official response to the matter has been characteristically lacklustre with the usual platitudes and promises that we have heard ad nauseam. For God's sake, are these Boko Haram members spirits that come from heaven (or hell!) to drop bombs' You cannot arrest a flood but for God's sake what is being done about security in this nation'Even areas thought to be hitherto safe are no longer immune to serious crime of heinous proportions. In saner climes, in the face of their palpable ineptitude in handling these issues, everyone in charge of security in this country would have been shown the way back to their various villages by now.Just when we were trying to live these two events down, there was Jos again with heavy damage and casualties on Monday, August, 29.For how long would we keep going round in circles like this' My heart goes out to the families of those affected by these tragic events and I pray that God will grant them the inner strength and comfort of the Holy Spirit required at this crucial time.Back to 'worktitudes'. Let your work be your own pulpit for demonstrating your faith if you have any.Laziness on your job is a complete disservice to your faith in God. Godliness and mediocrity are not synonymous.Make your input on the job a gift to your employer and to God. Your life is a gift from God but how you use it is your gift to Him.If you actually work like a stakeholder, who knows, you might actually soon become a partner.Hear this: Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts. (Proverbs 19:6)The labour union is not the loudest voice for enhanced remuneration, you are. Evaluate yourself before your employer does. That way, you do not need the input of the union to get a pay rise or the next promotion!Office gossip is a common feature of every workplace. However, more often that not, it is counterproductive and could lead to unpleasant consequences. Unless you have found another job and so couldn't care less, steer clear of office gossip when you notice that it is becoming very personal and petty. It is not in your own interest to participate in petty banter especially when the topic of discussion is your boss! You never can tell who you are talking to! Your boss may actually have deliberately set off the discourse through one of his loyalists on the job just to have a feel of the terrain, who the discussants are and what each one of them said. If you are not bold enough to let him know how you feel, keep your opinion about your boss to yourself; and if it becomes unbearable, resign! If you must talk, make your words sweet, just in case you have to eat them later! If somebody is good enough to keep you on the payroll, the least you can do is be charitable. In any case, remember that what goes round comes around. You will one day become boss and you'll get a dose of your own medicine.Money (salary) may be an important consideration on the job, but it is not synonymous with job satisfaction. In a recent research conducted on job satisfaction, while employers believed that salary was the top consideration of the employee in determining job satisfaction, to the employees who were polled, salary was a distant 7th or 8th on a priority scale of 10!What makes you satisfied on the job' Let's look at the acrostic S.A.T.I.S.F.I.E.D.S-etting ' The job and office setting is fundamental to job satisfaction. No one wants to be found working in a run-down shack for an office. No matter how much one is paid, if the light fittings are falling off, office furniture look like what was abandoned in front of a Salvation Army charity shop and creak at the slightest movement of the body, enthusiasm is bound to wane.A-ttraction ' You must know your primary point of attraction to the job itself. For you to effectively do this, you must first be able to find congruence between the job and your life goals and aspirations. Where this is lacking, you may find yourself in what becomes a 'dead-end job'. As I have had cause to say earlier, there are no dead-end jobs, only dead-end people. 'continuedRemember, the sky is not your limit, God is!
